breaking in rebuilt engine

what is the max rpm i can go on a motor that has been rebuilt? somebody told me 3000 and someone else told me 2500 which one is it ita a 140 mercruiser drive is alfa 1 i took it in the bay and i didnt go over 3000 and now my friend is saying i shouldnt have went over 2500 if thats the case is that bad the guy who i bought the motor from said he didnt know he wasnt sure so if someone knows that would be great. also should i plane out at 2500 rpms or that depends on the setup prop etc.

Rule one. Don't listen to that friend. He has no clue what he is talkiing about.

What year is this 140 Mercruiser?

the manuals have break in procedures for new motors. mine indicated to stay under 3/4 throttle for the first 10 hours, and try to stay above 1500 where safe.
