He might not be an icon, but he sure inspired a lot of young mind about nature. He will be missed.

He is/was an icon down under. 8)

Roscoe, the tidbits you're getting from the news and internet are probably showing him in an irresponsible light...he was much more than that. He [thought]he knew what he was dealing with at all times. You never know......you can skydive for 50 years and then walk into a prop...you never know.
I feel for the 8 year old daughter and the 3 year old boy...I lost my dad at a young age as well.

Re: Breaking news - Steve Irwin killed by a stingray

I got an email from kiwi phil this afternoon regarding this. I found out, not to long ago, that Steve's place is down the road from Phil's. He is having trouble loggin on again so I'll post the email in his stead...

Hi *****,
Remember talking about Steve the Crocodile Hunter and him living just up the road. You probably have heard the news, but if not: he died today from a barb to the chest from a large Stingray. Needless to say, the community is in shock as he really was a good local bloke done well. ******** tells me that the schools were notified pretty early in the piece as all the kids think highly of him. Very sad. He left a couple of kids. Guess Bindy must be 8-9yrs and Bob probably 2-3.
Havn't been able to make it on to uboats for 2 weeks now.....we are well and truly blocked out this time.....not for a lack of trying either.
Pass on my regards to all the blokes there.
Must away.
Cheers
Phillip

If anyone knows how to help Phil get back on iboats, give 'em a shout. Thanks.

What a stupid sob.
Can you imagine feeding a croc a dead chicken while holding a baby in his other hand.

Do they have internet access under that rock where you must be living? d:)

I agree most of the stuff he was doing was down right stupid, and his death is only another example of darwinism. On the other hand, he was a great environmentalist, and did alot of really great things for various species. I believe he donated all the money he made from his movie(s) to various animal causes.

Look up enthusiasm for wildlife conservation. If Steve Irwin's picture is not there it should be.

He did something about it rather than just make speeches.

Watched shows on his story today, along with extensive interviews. Lots on his family, wife and children.

Sometimes seemed a bit clownish to me, but always sincere and passionate about everything he did.

I think the world is a better place because he passed our way. Bindy and Bob can be justly proud of their Dad and the example he set for their generation.

Talk about irresponsible.

Have no comment on his passing, just on his stupidity.
What a great example he was for all the copycats.

Ok, let me have it.

Your not alone Roscoe. I Could not agree more.

By far, the people that have posted here have positive things to say about Steve and or his work. Why do people bother themselves with posting negative things about someone that brought so much joy to so many? is it because little people have small opinions of LARGE people? How many people have you made smile, let alone laugh? How much good have you contributed to anything? I'm sure this is wasted on you, but I feel better:love:

Glad you feel better, but I still never heard of him before today.
I have no knowledge of him being a "large person".
But I'm sure you are.
I have made many people smile and laugh.
Interesting that you call me "little people" even though you know nothing about me or what I have done to enrich other peoples lives.
Did Steve make people laugh? I don't know, and it makes no difference if he did.

Wouldn't it have been interesting if he had slipped or fallen while he was doing his baby stunt, and the croc had eaten the baby in front of all those people? Its one thing to put your life at extreme risk, but your baby?

[colour=blue]He was definetly larger than life, his onscreen personality was exactly the same as his private life.

He (and his company) gave millions to charities. He also funded numerous animal protection research programs.

The 'baby' incident was the one and only time he made a major fopar. He apologised and acknowledged the stupidity of it.

He's the genuine article, what you saw is what you got.

RIP.

If my only experience watching him was the infamous "Baby Bob" event I would likely agree with Roscoe and Flathead.

Because he was so expert on what he was doing there was no significant risk to the baby, but it sure looked like a brainless stunt to the rest of the world. The mistake was showing the film. He agreed that it was a mistake after the uproar in the media.

To judge the man's whole life and character by that one error, however, seems grossly unfair to me.

Seems his kids will be the real losers from this point forward. His wife knew the risks his career posed going into their relationship. My heart goes out to the children.

He was a great man and did a lot ofd neat stuff. But he always seemed to push things a little too far. His enthusiasm got the best of him.

I believe that once we have kids, our own actions should be controlled a little, so we can be alive to raise those kids.

I always remembered him saying, "you wouldnt want to be doing this" and then he would go and do it.

Yes, great to watch, great environmentalist (almost Goreish, get it), sometimes a bit on the red neck ( watch this) but a great entertainer and apparently the real deal in his gifts back to the animal causes and environment.

I always enjoyed his show and will miss it as I do Wild Kingdom. Blessing for his family as their loss is much greater than we feel.
