brief loss of power

I have a 180 h.p. 4 cylinder mercruiser. Sometimes when I give it gas it will make a spitting sound and lose power, sometimes it will stall and sometimes it won't. Any Ideas?

Lean idle mixture, faulty accelerator pump, in need of tuneup to name the most common reasons.
