I went to check my lawn tractor yesterday and it acted like the battery was weak. I put jumper wires on it and still would not turn the engine over, I figured it was a weak starter so I replaced it with a spare starter I knew was good and still it would barely turn the engine... I was stumped and then did a little research and learned that if the valves arent adjusted properly they will cause back pressure on the compression stroke which will be more than the starter can handle. Solution is to adjust the valves in (approx 5 thousands) This reduces the back pressure and the engine can then spin freely to crank..I hate to think what I might have been charged at the mower repair shop....All it cost was a new plug because I cracked the old one removing it..I am posting this now because many folks will soon be getting their mowers ready for the season and it might help someone else .

Hmmm. Interesting. I have a friend that had that same problem. The mechanic told him his engine was locked up and sold him a new one. Sounds like the mechanic hoo-doed him or either did not know. I am not going to mention this to my young friend because I do not want to spend $$ to get him out of jail!

you need to adjust the intake and exhaust valves - there are youtube videos showing step by step

edit - nevermind - just read the rest of your post :)
