I have a Brigges and Stratton 5HP Outboard motor that has given me no end of problems. I would like to ask others out there if they have had issues with the motor seizing?

I purchased the motor used but in 'as new' condition. It fired up and ran fine on a sawhorse at my house. I put it on my aluminum boat at the lake and it ran for about 2 minutes before it seized. I tried to find replacement parts but had quite a problem with that. Eventually, I found that there was no short block available from B&S, which makes me wonder why that might be. I found someone to un-seize the engine (by spraying in penetrating oil in the cylinder and letting it set for awhile). I put the engine back together and I AM SURE that I put the right amount of oil in the engine before starting it (750 ml of SAE 30 weight). The motor ran for about 2 minutes, then seized with a broken connecting rod. I drained the oil from the motor and there was 750 ml of oil in the engine. I thought the oil-slinger must be broken, but I took the engine apart and the oil-slinger is good. I can't think of why the engine would keep seizing. Has anyone had similar issues with this engine?

There seems to be some issue with Briggs and Stratton in providing information on the repair parts for this engine. I purchased the repair manual issue by B&S, but when you contact an authorized repair depot, there is a shortage of information on repair parts etc. At this point, I just want to know if I have a lemon, of if others are having issues as well.

Thank you in advance for you assistance, and happy
boating.

Ben Price
Ottawa, Canada

ve3cda@rac.ca
