Briggs not going into reverse

I have a 5 hp briggs and it grinds when put into reverse running.

Will go into Netural and Forward

Any help on what to do.

move the lever fast and make sure the idle is as low as you can get it ..I will look at my manual but I don tthink there is an adjuster for the linkage

There is an adjuster /link in the change rod ..single screw behind that plastic plug in the leg ..check its tight and has not moved . If its not moved then the chances are you have rounded off the corners of the drive dog in the gearbox ....some people take them out and clean up the corners or just fit a new one part number is 861285 clutch/pin kit....you can price it from that to see where to go ..the gear box is very simple ...sping pushes it into gear and rod pushes it out

removed plug and checked the adjusting screw was tight. What happens is when it is running it grinds trying to go into reverse. (Almost like not pushing a clutch in on a car) How do I split the lower unit. Is this something that is diffcult to do? Do you know where I can get a parts book or repair manual. Thank you for your help. Tom

I have the parts catalogue which has exploded views...everything comes out from behind the prop..very simple only about 6 parts ..bearing gear clutch gear bearing with a sping and rod in the center ..simplest I have ever seen ..
