hi folks... recently i came across a 1990 90 hp with less than 50 hours on it... got it for 400 bucks from the original owner..all service records in hand....

took it on the family vacation this past week... it ran superbly...and fast...
but a couple of what i think might be minor probs....

1. when i start it... and put it slowly into driive... it conks out... if i punch it into drive... no problem...runs great.... also if i try reverse.... slowly...it conks ouit...is that a simple adjustment?

2. at the end of the week, when i turned the ignition... i either got a whine...from the motor, and the starter didn't engage the flywheel... OR i got a "Click".... and nothing else.... i tried the old tap the starter and it fired up...then other times, the starter would engage properly...Could it be starter is going?

all and all, the motor flew around the lake... aside from the large amounts of gas... i am very happy... so a little help would be greatly appreciated...

as an aside, my family now loves me again... last motor kept conking out or wouldnot start....

thanks again...

On #2:

Disconnect and clean all connections in the large wires from the battery, including the battery terminals, and give special attention to where the battery ground cable attaches to the engine block.

Clean and lightly oil the spiral shaft the bendix rides up upon. If this is heavily greased or dirty, inertia can not overcome the friction and the starter gear will not rise into the flywheel. Thus you will hear the starter motor "whine" but the engine will not crank. Also: If the battery is low or poorly charged, the motor sometimes will not spin fast enough to raise the bendix into the flywheel ring gear.

If that does not solve the problem, then remove the starter motor, take off the lower end cap and clean the commutator (Copper circle) and brushes. Carbon build up from worn brushes can either short segments of the commutator together or insulate the brushes from the commutator. If you can find a set cheap, replace the brushes if they are worn to less than 1/2 -3/8 inch long. Careful! Don't lose the springs that hold the brushes tightly against the commutator. And it can be frustrating to get all four brushes back in. Make some sort of jig or tool depending upon whether you have a Prestolite or Bosch starter.

Hello,

Use 3 and 1 Oil. I purchased some at a Northern Tool and Hydraulics. Also, the Forces are hard on starters. You can find them on E-Bay for about $90.00 if that turns out to be your problem.

Regards,

Donald
