Well I'm glad D X is having good luck with his Briggs. And I like the concept. Unfortunately they do have their drawbacks. They are noisy at speed and vibrate terribly to the point of uncomfortable to hold on to the tiller.Have had trouble with rev limiter, metal pieces breaking from minor accidents.I believe they are not reccomended for trolling.Few service centers that have outboard knowledge. If it was mine to do it would be a OMC 5,5.5,or 6 hp
from the 50s-70s 2 cyl. smooth, relatively quiet, easy to service routine parts readily available some right here at iboats,A proven rugged design and you could buy a dandy for half the Briggs cost and fully refurbished for the cost of a Briggs.

Re: Brigs and stratton!!!!!!

I used to have one and never had any mechanical problems with it. It did vibrate really bad. Can't be used on a kicker bracket because it amplifies the vibration and it will rattle your fillings out. I'm not kidding. They are kinda loud although not as bad as many say. I think it's the kind of noise it creates that annoys people. I does sound just like a lawn mower running, only 3 feet from your head. It also has lots of cheap plastic parts on it. None ever broke on mine, but I didn't own it that long. I also don't like the fact there is no tilt lock on it. And it's ugly.

The up side? It's a reliable engine. It will idle along all day long, no problem. Never overheats. It's downside, being air cooled, can also be a plus. You can start it anywhere without water. And the biggest perk? It's cheap.

Re: Brigs and stratton!!!!!!

Hp rating may be on a plate on the transom.Flat bottom boat? Wood, aluminum, fiberglass? What is the width at the bottom and top.
For a boat of that size I like the Evinrude/Johnson motors of 5 to 10hp.
reliable, reasonably quiet, smooth, easy to work on,many parts new and used all the way back to the early 50s.Some right here at Iboats.

Not recommended for salt water use, lacks corrosion anodes, so wash/rinse well after use with lots of fresh water.

Johnson/Evinrude 5, 5.5 or 6 hp from 1955-79 would suit you best.
