Hey Saskatoon2005,
Try JB WELD from Canadian Tire. It works on everything. Also inexpensive (3 or 4 bucks)

Kerry

When plastic parts break it is often because they have become brittle. No glue will make it as strong as original.

Have you tried outboard disassemblers like tcoutboard.com? They should have a used part.

Re: Broke plastic part. Can I glue it?

I have sent a request for the part to twin city outboard.
Thanx for your input JB.
I have found a new part for this but the people want $152.58 CDN. That seems a little expensive for a piece of plastic that is 3 inches by half an inch. So I would like to get a used piece.
Just to let you know that I put new stator coils on my stator and couldn't remember how the little clips went on. I put them on the end and when i reinstalled the flywheel and pulled it...the flywheel got hooked up on the stator coil and broke the linkage that connects the megneto to the throttle.

So now I am in the process of repair for it. Thanks for your help all.

Re: Broke plastic part. Can I glue it?

Good advice already posted. I've found that most plastic parts can be repaired with an epoxy such as JB Weld or Five Minute if you can add mechanical reinforcing. Clean and scuff the surface to be glued then add thin metal plate or reinforcing wires. Being a flytier I often wrap a heavy nylon thread on top of the metal reinforcement. I will also use fine fiberglass cloth available at model shops with regular resin. With the proper reinforcement to distribute the stress and epoxy you will end up with a stronger part than the original. The reinforcement should be completely covered with epoxy. Epoxy alone won't provide enough strength at the glue line. It may take some time but it's cheap. Think stress distribution and do it in stages.

Re: Broke plastic part. Can I glue it?

After looking at the photos I wouldn't hesitate to fix it with metal and epoxy. This is what I would do:

1. Clean all parts with lacquer thinner.
2. Use Super Glue or thin epoxy to initially glue the parts together.
3. Measure the hole formed by the broken parts.
4. Make thin brass or steel plates to go on the top and bottom of the lever:
a. drill hole in the plate.
b. lay plastic part on the plate aligning the holes.
c. trace outline of arm on the plate.
d. cut out plate, flatten and scuff clean it.
e. if I had the time I would extend at least the top plate to cover both holes in the ends of the piece.
5. I would probaby fill the molded slot with epoxy and wires to make it stronger and give more area to glue the plate to it. You may have to shave the arm down to get enough clearance for the top plate so it won't bind with connecting part. Use a sanding block.
6. Epoxy the reinforcing plates on, one at a time.
7. Cut and bend reinforcing plates to cover the cracks on the sides of the arm, extend plates up arm.
8. Epoxy side plates on arm.
9. Fill and dress up any holes with epoxy.
10. Be careful that the roll pin doesn't stress the part. I'd probably oversize the roll pin hole and patch it with epoxy after assembly.

Looks like a fun job. For a retiree like me I would think of it as making $40 an hour and getting a stronger part. Check RC model shops for supplies.

Yes indeed - I was curious because my 9.8 does... but it's a '74, not a '73 - so I looked it up and you are indeed lucky, they didn't start using the switch box until '74. Actually I don't know which is "better" points or switch box, but I do know if the points go bad it looks likea US$30 fix, while the switch box is more like US$250

Hey Saskatoon2005,
In answer to your question reguarding if JB WELD works on plastic??..You bet it does! Roughen the plastic up a bit and follow directions. Sorry for delay to your question, as I have to wait til the better half vacates the PC!
Had a motor-cycle with a cracked housing near the oil supply, and used JB WELD on it and it never failed, even with the intense heat.
Good luck bud..

Kerry

Hey thanks a lot Rattle (Kerry) I may try that although I have notified Twincity outboards as a likely donor for a new-to-me unit pulled from an old outboard. looking forward to fixing this baby up and getting on the water this spring.

That's the best bet by far - getting a used part from a junked engine. HOpe it works out for you!
