My engine revs in forward, but stalls in reverse?

I Broke the Drive Shaft in an Alpha 1 Gen 1outdrive. I know opened the out drive and noticed that It was a clean brake just bellow the splines. I can manualy turn all the parts by hand.

Why did it stall in reverse? (before I took it apart)

Could have been in a bind. But more likely than not, you have two issues. A bad or incorrectly adjusted lower shift cable - AND a busted outdrive. After replacing the outdrive, be sure to check / replace the shift cable. While you're at it, go ahead and replace the drive bellows if it has been awhile.

The shift cable was working perfectly before this incident. It was just gone over and adjusted by a Wellcraft Dealer last year when I bought the boat.

Anything else I should check?

I think I'm going with a whole new out-drive (refurbished of course)

Forget refurbished. Go brand new. An SE106 outdrive is brand new and can be bought right here on iboats very reasonably.

SE out-drives have issues. The are hard to get fixed and the internal parts are not interchangeable with mercruiser parts.

Absolutely not true. I have one on my boat. I put one on my dad's boat. I put one on my last boat. No issues getting it fixed. In fact, I recently had an issue with shifting, and long story short, Sterndrive rebuilt the entire outdrvie for free. Great customer service and a good product at a great price. Simply cannot be beat.

uh.... NOPE.

When the driveshaft snapped in my stock merc drive, I ordered just an sei lower. broke it in according to instructions and have been running it hard for ythe past three years - with 400+ horsepower in front of it. no issues whatsoever... know a lot of guys with similar stories. I've also got a couple of uppers from them that have had no problems.

I've heard it from a couple of repair shops up north here. They could just be jerking me around.

No - They find refurbished one and put them on. You keep your broken on. It's cheeper to do that then try to get parts.

I would fix it myself, but don't have the special tools to take it apart. It don't look that difficult. It's just nuts and bolts and 1k worth of mercruiser tools I won't use again.

the smartest way to handle, IMHO, is to pull the top cover and have a look at the upper gears an the one bearing assembly you can see. If all is well there, order just a lower from SEI through here, put it on and go boating.
