HAH! I just did that on my flywheel. Using impact wrench on puller for an hour wouldn't pull it off. Gave the puller a good smack with the hammer, POP, came right off.

The impact wrench did all the work but the hammer sneaks right in and takes the credit. Typical.

Mine came off with a couple of taps from a lead dead blow machinists hammer.

You're tapping the center pin of the harmonic balancer...right? Also, This is the 1st flywheel I've removed. I measured the bolt...1-5/16. Sound right? How do you hold the flywheel still while removing the bolt? Use a box end wrench and use the HB with a rod through the bolt legs to hold the flywheel?

Very simple use a cheap Harbour Freight puller and pull the flywheel off, PM your phone number and I will explain to you the procedure, I can assured you I experienced the same problem a year ago and have help countless others since. NEVER apply heat to the flywheel since it can easily warp or damage the magnets under it.

Yes, when using a puller on a pesky flywheel, bearing, etc, if things don't start moving with reasonable pressure, smacking the center screw with a dead blow hammer will often provide just enough vibration to get things moving without offering much risk to the parts that are being disassembled...

I other words, tighten it down and give it a good smack....

Happy 2010...

Tried tapping and heli-coiling 3 new holes but that didn't work so I'm back to trying to get that original broken bolt out. Can't afford to take to machine shop to weld a bolt onto it so I'm going to try spinning it out with a tap/punch. Got the word on no heat and it's a good thing because I was tempted !

What did not work about the 3 new holes ???
Why the helicoils ???
What size did you tap for the bolts ??

Take the helicoils out of the new holes that you drilled, tap them with the biggest size bolts that you can get in the holes, quit foolin' around and pull that thing off! :)

a hint: keep the crank nut screwed on a bit, lest the flywheel pop off violently and hit you....

tapping out tomorrow to 3/8-18...no heli. Trying to do this project between life and work. I used the 5/16 heli's cuz I had the equipment already. Once I get this flywheel off it's gonna have to be rebalanced.

No need for helicoils. Drill and tap as large as you can for strength and go from there.
Why do you need to re-balance ???
