Broken cable...maybe?

Ok I was out on a 10 foot row boat, with a 6.5hp Mercury outboard, and coming out of a channel. I went go to throttle up, and it was like there was no resistance. It still shifts into forward and reverse, no problem, it will still move, I can put it in high idle and that works, but when I go to turn the handle either way to throttle up to go faster, it doesn't go, and you can feel in the handle that there is no resistance.

A little help would be nice....Thanks in advanced

Re: Broken cable...maybe?

Have you had a look under the "hood"? Most small outboards are a mechanical linkage to the throttle. Meaning, from the throttle grip on the tiller handle, a shaft goes through to the power head area and actuates the stator assembly that inturn moves the throttle valve in the carb using gears and linkages. I would take a look under the cover where the handle enters to see if the turning of the throttle grip moves the linkage all the way to the carb. You may have sheard a small pin that holds a gear to the shaft some where in the assembly or something to that effect. Keep in mind I mostly deal with older motors. My newest tiller motor is a 63' Merc 110 (9.8hp). It's happened to me on my 57' Johnson 10hp.

Thanks, I got that fixed, it was the linkage, and it just had to snap right back in place
