Broken carb part

I have a 1977 35hp that's been great, but new job responsibilities and a third child have left my boat alone for too long. Since Thanksgiving's around the corner and we usually go to Houma, LA for this, I figured I'd pull the carb off and give it a good cleaning as final prep to go catching. I started and finished the lower unit service last fall, so I'm good there. Just never got to the carb like usual.

Well, I got the carb off, then separated the top half from the bowl to soak them overnight (and wow does it need it!). When the top half came off, a little piece came out of the center tube. This carb has one jet, and it looks like that one jet is now a 1/2 jet. What now? Can I even get a jet for this carb, and if so is it difficult to replace? I don't see anything on the replacement in my Seloc, and haven't seen a jet as a listed carb part anywhere. Thanks for any help. The trout and reds are calling, help me answer them! :)

Re: Broken carb part

Jets are still available JHar....take the carb and the model number of the engine to any John/Rude dealer and they can get you one. Never heard of one just falling out before... Maybe the folks at the dealership can double check for ya'?

Thanks OBJ. It appears to have snapped in half, if you were to look up inside you can see the other half. Pretty strange!

Re: Broken carb part

hello
are we talking about the tiny tube(idle fuel pickup)inside the emulsion tube(main fuel pick up) or a part that is inside the fuel bowl. most late model OMC carbs used a setup of two brass tubes pressed in the carb body for idle and main fuel. some of the older ones had a tranfser port machined in the casting for idle fuel. can you remove the main jet from the fuel bowl. its hidden behind the drain screw.
good luck and keep posting

It's the tiny tube. This is making more sense all the time, at the end of last season it was incredibly difficult to maintain any kind of idle.

Re: Broken carb part

I visited a dealer here in town, took the carb in. It is the idle fuel pickup, snapped in half. The emulsion tube and pickup are pressed in to the top carb casting. They said the part isn't available. They said they did have a 1981 35hp Evinrude that was just removed from someone else's boat. Motor has no compression. They offered to sell me the carb for $100 or the whole motor for $300. What should I do here? Thanks again for the help!

Re: Broken carb part

Almost forgot the most important question, will parts from the 1981 motor work on my 1977?

Check ebay first of course. If you need to go fishing then your best bet is to pick up a used carb, and if you found one locally go for it. Get a 7 day warranty on it or something so you can make sure it is operational.

Can't tell you if it will fit or not.

You can probably find a running 81 35hp for around $500 so I would pass on the blown one for $300. But the carb may suit you and get you back on the water.

I lost the venturi's out of my 3.0L carb over the summer in the grass in my back yard when I was cleaning the carb. Impossible to get separately, and was quoted up to $175 for a used carb, $300 for a new one. I have no idea what a 1977 35hp carb goes for on average. My wife eventually found them, she can find the old needle in the haystack though. :)

Re: Broken carb part

Do a little shopping if your in no hurry. I think I have a body floating somewhere, ( carb that is )but I am all the way in Denmark. As these carbs last forever and motors are neglected and damaged, carbs should be easy to get at. Only carbs with choke butterfly will fit, or you will have to convert to the primer solenoid setup.

Re: Broken carb part

Some great news, found a fellow who dos outboard work here in town, he sold me a whole carb for $20. I thanked him and will likely give him my future business. He comes well recommended, I should have called him first.

Another problem now though, I had the lower unit off. I got it back on, now the shifting is messed up. Neutral is in gear, reverse is in gear, forward is now Neutral. Help! What did I put back incorrectly?? Thanks.
