My mercury 200hp, is going through a rebuild. The mechanic said one of the crankshaft rings broke but it would be alright if we used it anyhow because they are compressed and in a groove. Should I make him replace it or is it ok.

Re: Broken Crankshaft ring

I personally would be worried about any mechanic wanting to put a broken part in my motor that he is rebuilding, no matter how insignificant the part is.

That part just sits there in the grove to keep the crank/cases in alignment. In a pinch it would problably be fine to re-use, if you have the time the part isnt expensive (I dont see how it could be) and it would be peace of mind to know its 100%.

However, he is right, it will still run and work fine, but I would ask for it to be replaced.

-John

The crankshsft rings are to keep each cylinders' crankcase seperate. Since the crankcase transfers the air/fuel mixtue from the manifold to the combustion chamber it needs to be able to build up vacumn/pressure. the crankshaft rings keep the pressure from leaking off to other crankcases. Replace

At a whole $4.55 you'd be a bit silly (absolutely bonkers!) not to replace it.

Chris............
