broken impeller blades on new raw water pump

After I had the upper gear set reverse, gear and prop shaft changed. On my second outing my engine overheated. I pulled the raw water pump to find the blades destroyed. Could the mechs that recently worked on the boats have caused this? The impeller was changed last October.

rebuilding a drive would not ruin an impeller.reusing one installed last year may be a failure from age and confinement. When rebuilding a drive, the impeller is normally replaced, not reused, reguardless of age.

Sorry about that it was the pump on the drive itself

Then I stand on what I said,a used impeller should have been replaced.

Generally missing impeller parts are not a problem in either case.

Just S.O.P.

Put in a new impeller, look for any melted parts, reassemble and run.

Repost if problems continue.

an impeller is about $26.00

What kind of drive are we talking about here?

Ok sounds good thanks for your help DHP. For 17 years the impeller was changed every year, just curious why all of a sudden it would tear apart like that and is it necessary to have the triangle pointing down on the shaft?

Since you stated in your initial post that this happened on your second outing after the rebuild. I would assume all worked fine the first time, no over heats or anyting like that, Correct ? ? ? ? ? ?
If it worked ok the first time, and the only thing that will break the vanes like that is running without water, I would guess you picked up a plastic bag or kelp or ______ (fill in the blank) that covered the water intake and killed your pump. That or you ran the engine without water properly attached to the drive using muffs.

I think having the triangle pointing down may help installation, but I'm not sure.

Maybe this (or last) year the impeller stuck to the liner, and ripped when first cranked over this year.

Everything worked fine on the first outing the only thing I noticed was a low pitched wine while the engine was in neutral I did not think much about it but now I do. It did not make it while it was in gear.

I just noticed that because it said to make sure of that in the SELOC book I have for the drive.
