Broken mystery piece in Merc Blackmax 135

I'm not sure what this piece is, but when I took the hood off the motor I noted it was borken, and looked like it snapped off,

In one of the pictures you can see me hold the piece that was attached.

Could anyone tell me what this is, and what i should do to fix it, also, is it critically important?

thermal air valve.. sends air temp info to idle circuit in carbs.. pretty expensive bought new.. replacement is up to you.. won't hurt a thing not to run it.. might effect tha way it idles when really cold out.. I've never had a problem without it.
