Broken plastic nipple on fuel pump body

I have an 89 J15elcec and when I was removing the fuel pump to rebuild it, I broke off the nipple that the outlet fuel line connects to. I see that I can buy a new pump for about $70. Right now, that is not likely to happen.

Has anyone else had this happen? Any suggestions?

Sure....if it really is the outlet. In my case, i stepped on it and broke it.
That outlet piece is held on by a screw and is replaceable on its own for LT $5-.

I'm not that lucky. On mine the piece that comes off with the screw is the suction coming from the fuel tank. The piece I broke is molded in the body of the fuel pump. I had managed to insert a tight fitting hose that worked OK, but I need a more reliable solution.

Thanks for the input Tim.

There's a used one on ebay right now. Says for a 9.9-15hp but pretty sure they are the same. It's about $36. User Bigmune2

I have not tried it on a fuel pump, but in other situations, I have drilled out the hose barb hole and threaded it to accept a brass threaded male hose barb. I do not know if you have enough "meat" to do this on a fuel pump.

If you could find an exact fitting copper tube to fit in the inside of the inlet, you could epoxy the broken off portion and install that tight fitting copper tube at the same time. Once cured...pump fixed... There are always ways to fix things. but I would replace if it were me. I hate surprises when out fishing far from help or dock...

In that case my advice/comment was dead wrong. They are all the same configuration as far as I know....can't think why they'd be different.
I just replaced the piece that I broke and "assumed' that it was the outlet. So I am sure mine would have been the same config as yours is.

Sorry for the bad info.....good luck.
You might try a dealer and see if they have replaced a fuel pump that is the same body and maybe you could get the "dead" one as a source for the carcass and just swap over your known good innards?

Great ideas everyone. Cofe, that is what I was thinking, i did tap the outlet, but even if I could get a fitting in there, the I.D. would probably be too small. I looked at drilling larger, but like you said, not enough plastic would be left around the hole to be solid.

Tim, no problem. I like the idea of checking repair shops. I will pursue that next.

GM280, that is a great idea as well. If I can't find a cheap replacement, I will give that a shot.

One thing I plan on doing is re routing the hose around the back of the engine block. the original location runs underneath in front of the block and makes everything very tight and stressed. This will require either an angled hose barb or if I go with GM280 idea, I could put a nice bend in the tubing.

Its tempting to relocate the whole pump anyway. I can't see any advantage to the way it is wedged into the original position. Guess it saved on tubing length, and they weren't worried about easy access for repair.

Bonzoscott, I looked at ebay, none of the pumps on there were the right one. mine is the larger style with three hose connections.

In those years the electric start motors used a different (larger body) fuel pump that the rope start motors did.

That is correct, it is electric start. It also has a third hose connection for a vacuum line. I see that some of the larger style have only two connections. There is one of those on ebay now, but I need the three connections.

Machinist, I see the LeeRoy's Ramblings note: I have become a great fan of yours. My throttle cable adjustments were way off and your "Ramblings" helpful beyond description. It was also the only reference for setting my low speed idle screw at 4 turns instead of 1.5, which made a great difference. My thanks for that, Sir.

I decide to go with a fitting I bought. It is an elbow with a barb at each end. I used sandpaper to reduce the one end to fit snuggly in the body. Applied some Marine JB Weld prior to inserting the fitting, then coated it all the way past the elbow to maybe give it more stability. Once cured, I will sand off excess and re-assemble. Then I plan to re-install with new hose routed behind the engine block.

Well it looked good, but didn't pass pressure test. The fitting was fine, but the body has developed a hairline crack. Enough to make it leak. Guess I'll be buying a replacement after all.
