Re: broken skeg

rob : JB weld and some fine window screen can work wonders on a skeg! three things to do though. 1.)make sure ya rough the surface with some 60 grit sandpaper. 2.)be sure to THOROUGHLY mix the JB weld. 3.)work in thin coats, and be sure to let each coat dry for a day or three! and make sure ya keep it warm (65/70 degrees). i have repaired several this way, and the one is about ten years and still going strong! it's a tedious process, but the end result is strong, and fairly inexpensive.

Re: broken skeg

You don't need a skeg for your motor to perform properly. It mainly protects the prop. It will probably work fine without one but I happen to be a detail freak and couldn't handle knowing it's missing a part that's supposed to be there!! If you have the busted skeg a good propshop can weld it back on. they might even have some donor skegs lying around.

Mred 2432- What do you do with the window screen? I'm in need of doing this project and can only afford JB weld. Thanks

Re: broken skeg

Rob, Mercury sells just the skeg. To install it the residual part of the skeg is cut off and the new skeg welded on. I had mine repaired this way. The welder had some outboard experience and did not need me to strip out the gears, prior to welding it. It was a bit pricy though (Skeg $20, welding $120)
