Re: Broken Spark Plug

Do I heat just the inside lip of the remaining thread, or shoot the propane directly down?
Yes, they are auto plugs, but I did not install them. I am replacing them with marine plugs. All the ceramic came out,I just didn't take a picture of the rest of the broken pieces.
Thanks again!

Re: Broken Spark Plug

Earlier I stated to heat around the plug but Capt Ken stated to heat the plug remnant. I think he may be correct. If you don't have acetylene, I would go buy a Mapps gas cylinder for your propane torch. It burns much hotter than propane.

The idea here is to let the heat expand the part and then cool and contract. That will help break the rust bond. It would be good to have something to cool the plug down rapidly as well. I'm not sure what that would be, maybe someone else has an Idea. If you could direct some A/C refridgerant on it, that would be ideal. It might be good to repeat the cycle a couple of times. You want to do everything you can to keep metal shavings from falling into the cylinder.

Once cooled, apply the penetrant then go after it with the easy out.

You could use a can of that compressed air like you use cleaning computer parts. It comes out very cold and would not hurt anything...

Re: Broken Spark Plug

My fishing buddy had this happen to his 1992 Olds Bravada as we were climbing a steep hill. When I noticed I'd lost him I turned around and upon inspection the exact same thing happened. Fortunately though, the engine was running and the procelan did get ejected. Although the truck only had 62,000 miles on it, the plugs were 14 years old at the time and the heat/cool cycling took its toll. The local Chevy dealer extracted the remainder of that plug and broke two more in the process of removing the others. Those were AC's. The dealer also indicated this not an uncommon occurance. The lesson here is change the plugs regularly whether they need it or not.

Well gentlemen, I am finding that the easy out is not so easy. I did as you suggested, but to no avail. Any other suggestions before I tow my boat to a junk yard?

Why not pull the head and work at it properly. It's only one head after all. There is no reason to despair to that point! All these recommendations are hope and pray or cross your fingers kind of stuff that waste your time and get you discouraged. In the time it will take you to try all these things, the head could be laying before you ready to be worked on.

I was figuring a 3.0. I see more of those since the water drips around the engine covers and down around the sparkplug. Usually gets the rear plug first. You're just being too cautious. Heat the remainder of the plug til its glowing and don't worry about cooling it. While its hot, drive the easy out in and unscrew it. What have you got to lose!!! Worse case, ya got to pull the head.

Given the pic of the sparkplug remnants, I'd love to see pics of the rest of the engine.....

Capt Ken,
You are completely correct, it is the rear plug. I have a "muscle man" coming over this morning to help out.

If you ever saw bomar's real picture, you would realize the avatar is an improvement.
