Broken transom clamp - can I bolt instead?

I have a 95 model Johnson 25hp I got recently. One of the clamps is broken on one side. A neighbor told me instead of replacing it, just drill two holes in the boat with the ones on the motor and bolt it. You can see the holes I am referring to in the pics below. Thanks!

use washer on the outside of the motor, inside transom, stainless bolts. used the good clamp also. will be ok. use dow 4200 in holes and on bolts to seal the holes.

If its alluminum why dont you just have the piece rewelded back on. have the welder fill the hole then drill it and retap it

No! No! A thousand times NO! Just find a junker and get another clamp off it. These clamps take all the stress of acceleration, turning, impact loads from bouncing over waves and wakes. Welding may be satisfactory, but it depends on the skill of the welder and it can weaken the metal next to the weld. Best solution is to get another clamp.

Thanks for the replies. I would much rather put a new clamp on there but cannot find one anywhere. Anyone have an idea where i can look online?

Go to the engine repairs--E/J forum and ask there. Somebody might have a junker. Worst comes to worst, you should still be able to get new parts for a 95 At an E/J dealer. will be pricey though. I'll bet that clamp will cost at least 200 new

I managed to find a few places that sold them new for under $40. I got one on the way now! :)

Thanks

You might to consider both bolting and clamping.

I have a Johnson 1988 28 hp, the motor bracket looks a whole lot like your picture. It is both clamped and bolted at the locations you pointed out. It appears to have been done by the dealer, and my guess it?s been that way for close to twenty years. I don?t see myself pulling this unit off the river bottom anytime soon.

We bolted my dads 35 hp to the boat. Sorta slows down any attempt to steal the motor. Gives them reason to take the boat too!

bolting it is the best to do ...... my racing motors that takes alot of beating (50hp yamaha modifieds) are bolted on only - no clamps .......

When you guys just bolted yours and not use clamps, was it the same two holes as i have in my picture? Those two holes are enough to hold the motor on the transom fine?

Thanks

I have the 88' version of that motor with the same transom clasp. I bolt it AND use the clamps. IMHO you will need to use both the bolt and clasp or the clasp by itself, but not just the bolts to properly secure that motor. Put it on your boat with just the bolts once and you will see what I mean.......

well we use 4 holes ..... but you have a light 25hp, if you bolt with the 2 holes and use the 1 clamp that is still good you should be fine ......
