I was trying to purge the air from my 3 ram 1984 Mercury tilt/trim unit and the vent plug broke off the lower starboard side. Although it's just hanging there, it can't be removed all the way. Can this plug be replaced? Can it be fixed? Where would I find a replacement? Thanks, Greg.

Re: Broken Vent Plug on Mercury Tilt/Trim Unit

Hi Greg,i did exactly the same yesterday and its taken me 1 hr to get the remaining of the plug out,had to cut away at it then push it through towards the pump, then had to drill a bolt exracter into the plug so i could release the hydrolics to move the trim manualy. I will be looking at your replys because i need one as well and if i find one will post the link to you. Richard.

If you can get the remaining part out, you can get a replacement part from Mercury ...

Mercury part #893929A01 VALVE KIT-RELIEF $46.80 .
( the valve itself + it's O-rings )

Thanks for all your help. Will I have to remove the engine from the transom to get at the plug to remove it?

Hi, no you should not have to remove the engine, get yourself some sharp wire snips and cut away at the end of the plastic body and keep going until you cant cut anymore of it,on the odd occassion i used a drill bit to basically break down the plastic end of the valve, then try feeding it through towards the inside of the motor and ensure you have the engine tilted out of the way so you can see the part coming through, try all directions with it and be patient and it will come out i did not think so at first but it did.took 45 mins. Then to get the rest of it out i drilled a extractor drill bit into the valve and out it came, hope this as helped and please let me know how you get on.

You can also heat a large flat blade screwdriver and sink it into the plug. (the plug is nylon or plastic) let the plug and screwdriver cool down before trying to extract the plug.
