Let me start off by saying this is my first time posting on iBoats but I have benefited from the collective knowledge here on numerous occasions.

I recently noticed that I had some water in my pontoon, so I opened the vent plugs on top to pump out the water. That is all done and I plan on getting a crack welded this week. However, all six of my vent plugs broke because they were cheap plastic. I can't figure out how to clear the threads out that are left in there to put in new plugs. Therefore, I was considering a different way of "sealing" the vent holes and wanted to get some input if the experts here thought it would work.

I will explain what I plan to do and include a diagram of how I propose to fix so that hopefully between the two, people will understand what I plan to do.

Where the vent plugs are, there is a round piece of aluminum that is welded onto the pontoon. I want to put a piece of vinyl tube over that and then tighten it down with a pipe clamp. Then on the other end of the vinyl tube, I would insert the proper sized PVC pipe plug and then also put a pipe clamp around that.

It seems to me that this would seal the vent holes and make it easy enough to open in the future if I would need to. Thoughts anyone?

Well, no responses here and I plan on working on the boat tomorrow. Any feedback on this idea or other suggestions to get the broken drain plugs out of my pontoons?

Sorry, that should work fine, as a matter of fact we started using vented plugs last year because our tubes were building up presssure and it woudl make them BANG really load as the baffles got some pressure on them, doesn't hurt anything but it will scare the bejesus out of you, aslo if you take a hot tube and put it in a cold lake it will actually put the tube ubnder a vaccum so if you do have a small leak it actually makes it worse because it will suck water in.

The hose and plugs should be fine by themselves and maybe a small amount of air wiil be able to leak around the threads on the plugs to help equalize your tubes but it is a good idea and should work out fine.

Well I have the vent tubes sealed up using the method I mentioned above. I had the boat out on Friday night and there were no adverse side effects. So I would recommend this method to anyone that has vent plugs that break off in the pontoons.

5150abf, thanks for your input on the matter.

That sounds like a good resolution. How much higher is your new vent above the pontoon? I may do this on my pontoon because my toons pick up splashed water through the vents.
