Need help, took a rock while towing my boat to the lake to the windshield. Its a curved windshield made by Taylor Made, its on a 2004 Crestliner 1600 Super Hawk

the insurance company is talking about totaling the boat out... I've literally only made about 2 payments so far on this boat!!! just got it in march!

I'm so confused on this issue of what will happen ... will my boat become uninsurable.... ??? how dose this normally work??!

Let them total it, buy it back from the insurance company and find a used windshield.

Sometimes you just gotta get firm with them. Tell them you only need the windshield repaired, and that that's all they WILL do. My dad lost his truck in an accident, they were only going to give him like 14k, after he got firm with them, they kept coming back with more and more and in the end he got like 26k. The first offer from an insurance company is usually bogus just to mess with the customer and see how much your willing to take.

If they total it, you're current lien should be paid in full, else you didn't have enough coverage.

Then it'll be up to you and the insurance company (maybe just them) to determine the current market value of a totaled out 2004 Crestliner SuperHawk.

Might be low enough you can pay cash, then no lien.

Since it will have been totaled out by the insurance company, you might have trouble getting a loan if they want more for it then you're willing to pay in cash.

I'd also check w/ your state to confirm you can get a salvage title for a boat. Can't imagine why you couldn't..........

Out of curiosity, what kind of deductible have you got that you would even be making a claim for that?

Here in KY a totaled car (salvage title) just means you cannot get full coverage, just liability. At least that's the way I understand it

My advice-don't get the insurance company involved. They will do what's in their own best interest and not yours. And they'll make you pay for it all in the long run.

I'm not sure about finding a used windshield, but I can't see it being that hard. Or you can have an acrylic windshield custom fabricated for about $600. Yes, it sucks to shell out $600, but your boat doesn't end up with a salvage title, you don't go through all the hassle with claims and trying to buy it back, and you don't spend weeks without a boat. Plus they don't raise your rates and you don't pay a deductible.

Just one man's opinion.

I had to replace a brand new Mazda 2015 windshield. I did not even have it for a month. My insurance would not cover it. Had to shell out 600.00. I switched to state Farm after that and now all my windshields are covered. Don;t even have to pay deductible.

Insurance companies are out to make a profit, not to service the customer.
They want your check every month and don't want to hear anything else from you.

Tell them that if they want to total it out, since you have a bill of sale for it from 2 months ago, that must be its value and they can write the check for that or you'll see a lawyer.

They can fix it, or total it. But they took the premium so they need to pay the appropriate amount.

You already got them involved... the paperwork for the total-out is in the insurance company's hands.

Insurance is the game of getting people to bet that something bad will happen to them. No matter what the customer loses. The company immediately applies every deduction they can from the payout on a claim.

My brother was broadsided in his 3 day old Toyota truck by a drunk in a big Cadillac. The insurance co REFUSED to write off the truck because at 3 days and under 50 miles they couldn't get away with less than new replacement. Since they wouldn't total it, CA law said it had to be fixed to the satisfaction of the owner... He took it to Porsche and had them laser align the truck... which meant they had to order a new frame and 2/3 of the body panels (disassemble the thing and build a new truck using the old engine, passenger door and a few other pieces). It ended up costing the insurance co (of the drunk) 3X the original purchase price of the truck.

You can make them do what is right...

Obviously, their underwriter felt that the cost of the repair was more than the boat was worth.

You could get professional appraisals (that will cost YOU) and prove them wrong, or just forget it all and don't make a claim.

Step 2 - change insurance companies next year.

Avoid the insurance if you can.

For a ray of hope...My camper blew a tire and ripped a hole in the floor. and dented up the side. They totaled it for a value of %70 of what I paid for it 3 months before. I bought it back and ended up with a check for about $1800 and no cash out of pocket. Bought a set of nice honda generators. I fixed the floor for $200. Sold the camper 3 years later for more than they totaled it for...

Some will depend on the insurance company. Mine will not insure a salvage title at all.

I have the same issue with my boat, a rocked shattered a piece of glass, and I CANNOT I mean CANNOT for the life of me find a curved piece of glass ANYWHERE to replace it. I cannot afford to buy a new piece of glass from the dealer. I pretty much look weekly for a piece of glass, I would call your local dealer and see how much they would want for it but it wont be CHEAP. Worst case let them total the boat, but it back, and put a piece of plexi glass...or let them have it pay off the lien on it and buy another

Dealer will likely be no help on a 12 year old boat. The only solution is to go to the link at Taylor and request a quote to see if they still have the templates.
