So I am going to pick up my 383 long block tomorrow. It has a roller cam of course and I was told I needed a bronze distributor gear, question is what size? I have seen them .491 inches .5, just not sure. I was also told to get a bronze tipped fuel pump pushrod. Anything else I need to replace with this combo? thanks

Re: bronze distributor gear?

If it is a solid roller cam then yes a Bronze gear will be needed along with a bronze tip fuel pump pushrod. If it is a hyd roller then it will not need a bronze gear and take the OEM fuel pump rod.

.491 is OEM GM shaft diameter and will fit any gm distributor for V-8's. MSD, Holley, and Accel for the most part take a .501" diameter gear. The measurement is the ID of the gears.

Great thanks for the info. It is a hyd roller. When do you need a steel distributor gear then?
