Hello: I have come by a Brooklure 3 HP that I plan to restore, mod.#230-51-3D ser.#492864. Sold by Speigle catolog, believe 1948. First I need to know who built it? Block is super clean, no burn. Original owner said it would fire with some gas squirted in carb. My first venture into o/b repair in 40 yrs. [I'm 74] any info greatly appreciated.

1951-53 3Hp made by Gale. Parts aren't going to be available. But that don't mean it won't run. :)

Hmmm. Made by Gale.

I think parts for a Johnny JW-10 ('52-'54 3HP) just might work.

At that time Gale, a division of OMC, was making a lot of store-brand engines that matched, or nearly matched the Johnson and Evinrude products of the period.

In either event, www.twincityoutboard.com has tons and tons of old engines scrapped for parts. It would probably be worth a try.

Check out the JW-10s in the Johnson Service Manual at your local library and see if it looks identical to your Brooklure.

Good luck. :)

Thanks Willyb & JB I was thinking there might be other brands by gale in the same period, and JBs post verified that. I thought it looked a lot like a Firestone of that era. Hope I can contribute to the forum as I was in the marine field from 56- 73--thats 1956-76 JB. Appreciate you all.

I'm afraid that WillyBWright is correct here. The Gale 3hp engine of that time (and for a few years afterwards) was based on the earlier Johnson 2.5hp. I might be wrong about this and it may have been the Evinrude 3.3hp but either way it bears little mechanical resemblence to the later JW/Lightwin series.
Service Manuals are available, but parts will definitly require some hunting. The folks over at AOMCI should be able to help track some down.

AOMCI, click here.

Appreciate the input Paul. I have ordered a Clymer manual that supports the Brooklure according to the ad. Won't stick it in a barrel until I receive same. I am sure I will be back. Also have an Eska/sears 4.5 HP to mess with.

I just picked up a Brooklure 300. I don't know anything about them, would like anything I can get, pics etc. Thanks, Old Papa

Don't listen to any of that stuff you just read. It is not a Johnson or an Evinrude--or Firestone. It is a Gale. The only thing same as the Johnson & Evinrudes is the Ignition system, and recoil starter innards.

Some parts are available. Depends on what you want.

I have two of them at the moment and have had several in the past.

Not only that, but a lot of the 3hp Gale made motors were singles, whereas the Johny?rudes were twins. So, like F_R says, the ignition system and recoil innards might be the only thing that is the same.

Firestones were typically made by Scott and/or McCulloch:cool:

You're only as "old" as you feel.

I feel really old when people keep digging up and hijacking 5 year old threads.
