brought a motor back to life need tips

I have a 1978 85hp Evinrude that I brought back to life after setting for no more than 7 years in somebody's yard I paid $450 for boat, motor, trailer and all mainly for the motor. I junked the boat I was planning on putting it on and found another freebie in better shape. Only thing the motor would do was fire when I got it home and I didn't do nothing but hook it to the battery. I soaked the carbs in carb cleaner. I replaced all the fuel lines, spark plug, screwed up and lost some parts off of the manual fuel pump so I got the motor running using an electric fuel pump for an automobile. Been a month sense I had the motor running and I just got the regular rebuilt fuel pump back on the motor today and got rained out so I still half to hook up the fuel lines. Compression on the top 2 cylinders were 105 bottom 2 were 102.

My questions are: (When the motor was running it was running off of muffs)

The motor was pumping water when I had it running each time a steady stream, will I need to replace the water pump to be on the safe side? If I recall right the previous (original) owner said the motor had all that done not to long before the boat got parked. My brother has been running his 75 model 115hp Evinrude for a few years now and he hasn't had to do anything to it motor wise.

I was told the black oily looking stuff coming out of the motor's exhaust was old sut possibly being blowed out from sitting so long, is this true? I wasn't putting out much and it was not a constant thing.

I haven't put this motor in gear to see what it would due I am planning on changing the gear oil (I was told the procedure on how to do so). Will it hurt to see what it will do in both reverse in forward gear before I spend any more money on the motor? I don't recall how much the gear lube is supposed to cost.

Will Lock Tight work on the power head bolts? I noticed before I even got it running that it had loose head bolt here and there, nothing stripped so far thank god. Don't plan on putting it on unless they come loose again from running the motor.

Any tips would be much appreciated. I'll probably be posting another thread later when I go to tackle this 1957 Johnson 35hp lol.

Okay, lots of questions - some very short answers.

First - replace the impeller. They break down with age as well as use.
Second - your instincts are probably correct about the soot being unburned oil. No worries there.
Third - replace the lube, and shift the gears. No harm there.
Fourth - properly torqued head bolts should not require any loctite or other threadlocker.

One other question

Iwombat I appreciate it. One other question, is there a way to dial in the choke? I hate the thought of paying $50 bucks an hour to have the carbs tuned in. I ment to mention that when I did have the motor running it did spit and sputter in idle I didn't notice it at first until my uncle pointed it out. I was told that the choke linkage (since I had to undo it to get the carbs off to clean them) the butter flys might not be lined up like it is suposed to be causing this problem. What would be a good way to line them up, or is it another problem?

the choke plate or the throttle plate, the choke plate is the first in the carb, and is either open or closed, manually or buy the solenoid, the throttle plate is the second plate and is connect to the electrical timing of the motor, there is a step by step procedure for synchroinizing the engine. not sure if the 78 had adjustable low speed jet or not. carb adjustment are in the engine faq forum.

I don't recall seeing those type of adjustments while looking at the carbs but I could have missed them.

I'll look it over again to make sure.

Thanks for your time.

A manual is well worth the investment if you want to save money DIY. A hour of labour will pay for the manual.

I'll half to price one on the way down to pick up another boat and trailer tomorrow. Got to replace my trailer due to the mobile home axle has it raised to high to launch and load the boat easily. As for the boat on the trailer it is just another fixer upper or junk haven't decided yet didn't eaven look at it closly. $125 for mainly the trailer. Guess it wouldn't hurt to have a manual on hand. Still got to check out the carb adjustment in the engine faq forum that Tashasdaddy mentioned, that may save me from the cost of the manual.
