I have a 1978 85hp Evinrude that I brought back to life after setting for no more than 7 years in somebody's yard I paid $450 for boat, motor, trailer and all mainly for the motor. I junked the boat I was planning on putting it on and found another freebie in better shape. Only thing the motor would do was fire when I got it home and I didn't do nothing but hook it to the battery. I soaked the carbs in carb cleaner. I replaced all the fuel lines, spark plug, screwed up and lost some parts off of the manual fuel pump so I got the motor running using an electric fuel pump for an automobile. Been a month sense I had the motor running and I just got the regular rebuilt fuel pump back on the motor today and got rained out so I still half to hook up the fuel lines. Compression on the top 2 cylinders were 105 bottom 2 were 102.
My questions are: (When the motor was running it was running off of muffs)
The motor was pumping water when I had it running each time a steady stream, will I need to replace the water pump to be on the safe side? If I recall right the previous (original) owner said the motor had all that done not to long before the boat got parked. My brother has been running his 75 model 115hp Evinrude for a few years now and he hasn't had to do anything to it motor wise.
I was told the black oily looking stuff coming out of the motor's exhaust was old sut possibly being blowed out from sitting so long, is this true? I wasn't putting out much and it was not a constant thing.
I haven't put this motor in gear to see what it would due I am planning on changing the gear oil (I was told the procedure on how to do so). Will it hurt to see what it will do in both reverse in forward gear before I spend any more money on the motor? I don't recall how much the gear lube is supposed to cost.
Will Lock Tight work on the power head bolts? I noticed before I even got it running that it had loose head bolt here and there, nothing stripped so far thank god. Don't plan on putting it on unless they come loose again from running the motor.
Any tips would be much appreciated. I'll probably be posting another thread later when I go to tackle this 1957 Johnson 35hp lol.
