Brought her home on early Tuesday morning (2am)!

We left Sunday morning at 4am from Wisconsin. Got to OK about 4pm. Went to the hotel and then the dealership to look at the boat. We went to launch it and absolutely loved it BUT the bilge wasn't working and the engine compartment was filling with water quickly after a 15min boat ride.

So we're crazy tired and just drove 800 miles and tell them to fix it. The dealership, Arrowhead Boat Sales in Grove OK, was very good to us. Besides the bilge not working the CD player would only go up in volume and not down. This was now at around 6pm at night on Sunday. They promised to look into the water and told us that they would just give us $200 cash for a new CD deck because they didn't have any in stock.

Around 9pm that evening the owner calls us at the hotel room and to let us know they hauled the boat down to the lake three times and finally found why there was water coming in. Apparently there was a rip in the rubber boot that was attached to the plastic pipe that the steering cables go into. After that was fixed they cleaned the float on the bilge pump and that worked.

Monday morning we go back to the dealership and pump some water into the engine compartment and verify the bilge works. He also shows me the boot that was fixed. We take it back out on the water and I put it through it's paces and verify no water comes in. For our troubles they comp our night at the hotel and throw in three nice neoprean life jackets for my son, wife and I. We air up the tires on the trailer and head out.

15 hours later we arrive back in Wisconsin without any incidents. I was completely tensed up the entire trip home. Never exceeded 62mph on the highway but unluckily hit St. Louis 5pm traffic. My Titan got 8.7mpg the entire drive home and about 15mpg without the load on the way there, so over all it was a $300+ adventure but well worth it. Hauling in 4th gear on premium gas bites.

A couple of questions:

1) the bolt and butterfly nut that is on the white light attached to the top of the bimini is gone - is that something a hardware store has or do I need to order that specially? Luckily the bimini was down and the light didn't get tore off.

2) After 800 miles on the trailer hauling it home I want to get the bearings repacked for our travels this summer. With drum brakes on all four tires is this an easy job compared to a brake-less trailer or am I better off taking it to someone that knows what they're doing?

Here she is:
2004 SunTracker 22' XP3 Party Barge Tritoon
Mercruiser 3.0l Alpha One 135hp
Tracker bunk trailer

Congrats on the new boat. I would take care of the bearings myself, It is a skill that you will use being a boat owner and not at all difficult. One thing I don't miss about an I/O is replacing bellows. Keep an eye on the exhaust bellows, if the boot on the throttle cable was cracked I would be interested in knowing when the other bellows were replaced.

From what I was shown on the outer unit, the exhaust at idle is ported out near the top of the unit and under speed through the prop. Where can I inspect the exhaust bellows?

You have 2 bellows on that I/O where the outdrive connects to the transom. One is your drive bellow that contains the U-joint and the other is the exhaust bellow. They are large rubber boots, you can't miss them.

1. The bolt and butterfly nut were probably just stainless steel so you should be able to find replacements at a good hardware store.

2. Repacking the bearings is the same on a hub with drum brakes as it is on one without brakes.

Thanks for the info guys - as soon as it's above 30f again I'll get out there and look at it.

I haven't seen your earlier threads, but why did you had to drive this far to find this boat? SunTrackers are everywhere? Did you get a killer deal? Sounds like a fun adventure anyway. You have a very understanding wife to be willing to let you drive that far to get a boat.

I noticed you said as soon as its above 30f I'm guessing you mean the temperature there, hopefully after testing the boat on the water you or the dealership drained the engine before you took it home to the freezing temps?? Just a thought...

That's correct on the deal. This boat around Wisconsin was about 4k more! For some reason as you head south towards OK, TX and FL the boats dramatically drop in price.

LOL oh yeah! Dealer showed me the winterization steps and I made sure that the hoses were disconnected and the water drained out before we left OK.

i think the leaky boot is a common theme on that era suntracker. my 05' regency with the 3.0L I/O had the same crappy boot. there is a much better design on the newer models. if yours is like mine, its just a little accordion boot. the new ones have a stout solid rubber boot. i just wrapped mine in saran wrap and then in thick vinyl with zip ties and electrical tape. seems to work alot better though still not ideal. when it warms up some and i can stand to be in the water for longer periods of time, i'll do something better.

Yep, accordion boot is correct. I can see that baby being a huge PIA to change out too.

Well I did look for a "used" tritoon but for some reason around here in Oklahoma most of what you find for sale is the older pontoons without the performance designs. I just figured that having been use to being able to hit 57 MPH (GPS) on my 5.7 VIP 20 footer that I would never be happy at a max in the low 30's. Besides when is the last time you were disapointed that you had too MUCH power?
