I will start by saying that I am new to this forum. I have seen some very interesting information here, and it is very much appreciated. I will also start by teling you that I am the happy new owner of a what I think is a 1957 12hp Buccanner outboard. This motor belonged to my deceased grandfather who passed it down to my father, and now to me. Well the problem is, back before I was born, (now 40), my father blew this thing up. I recieved it in 2 buckets. The model number is 12D16B. the serial number is 705635. It will be quite the adventure. I have purchased a 54 model seaking (12hp) off of ebay for parts. Hope it works. I just cant seem to find the exact mobel number that I have to get the (off of the shelf parts) to finish the job. Any help would be appreciated.

For the most part I think it safe to let equivalent vintage OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) be your guide.
I've owned 2 late 50's OMC 12's and both of 'em were HORSES - well worth the effort to get 'em & keep 'em running.
Good luck.

Re: Buccaneer-wierd model number

Welcome to the iboats forum! The members here are great and can help you solve any problem with your boat, motor or trailer. I looked at a couple of reference sources and could not find that model number either. It sure does look correct for a 1957-1958 Gale Buccaneer. Some of the forum members have access to the serial number cross-reference so, hopefully, one of them will post in shortly and answer the question for all of us. As a grandfather, I think it is absolutely wonderful that you are trying to save that great old motor. Good luck!

EDIT: Any chance the first character/digit is a two? I found a 22D16B in the model number search. It's a 1959 rated at 25HP.

I found a listing of m/12D16 as a 1957. There wasn't a listing of 12D16B.

http://www.discount-marine-parts.com/

They show the 1954 model number as 12D11.
You might try to ask over on the AOMCI web site;

http://www.aomci.org/index.htm

I had a 1957 Buccaneer m/12D15B. Kinda wish I'd a kept it,
but it was pretty heavy and I traded it for a Scott-Attwater
4.6hp that My 7yr old Daughter claimed as Hers.
Good Luck with it.

Very sure that the model number I listed is correct. I have found the 12D15B listed in most everything. Trust me, it has caused me to go back and look at mine several times. The plate is very legible, and the serial number is listed on a freeze plug on the block. Was hoping that someone would tell me that it was an experimental, and that it was worth thousands..

You can buy a service manual and parts catalog for your motor online at http://www.outboardbooks.com/index.cfm/manual/12D16B/. The parts catalog will give you the OMC part number that you can use to order parts. Good luck with the motor restoration! I have a 1957 12hp Gale that I restored and now runs great.
