Buddy Bearing Install complications

This galvanized trailer I have had at one time a Bearing Buddy type protector. I lost the only one it had left and to be honest I don't even remember what side had it. Anyway, tried to put the Bearing Buddy brand protector I bought in Walmart and they wont go in at all in one side. There is something like a cylinder collar blocking the hub. Is as if the previous bearing protector broke and left the thinest part inside. The other side it goes a bit in but it also has something similar blocking the Bearing Buddy from going all the way in. It goes like 1/8 and that is it.
Being new to the bearing protectors I am not sure what I am seeing. Is it possible for these Bearing Buddy to just break and leave part inside of the hub? Once I get the clearance needed, is the Bearing Buddy supposed to go all the way in?
The picture I added is not the exact Bearing Buddy but it was easier to illustrate what I was trying to explain on that one. The one I have is the one that has Bill Dance on it and it also has some grooves in the part that goes into the hub. See it here:

I circled in red the part that I think was "left" in the hub after the old bearing protector "broke". Also, is that part supposed to go all the way in? I suppose so. The instructions in the package are null....

They should go all the way in. You can remove the wheel and hub, remove the outer bearing, and from the back side, use a drift punch to drive out the old piece (if that's what you are dealing with).

First, there could be a piece of the old BB in the hub and it has to come out like detailed above.

Second, I put a set in of Red Eye brand protectors from Walmart in my camper yesterday. They were chromed steel similar to the ones in the pic above. They were a bear to drive in. Once they were all the way in, they seem to be pushing on the outer bearing or castle washer and causing the end play to be too tight. I had to use a grinder to "shorten" them a bit.

Thanks guys, I should be taking the hub out anyway as I want to a minimal, replace the grease. I might get the bearing kit and replace them. I was just wondering if this is unheard off for a bearing protection cover to break that way.

Went and took one hub out and found out it was an old bearing protector that broke. It is made out of plastic!!! Here is a photo of it. It is the first item from left to right on the top row.

I have a few questions but will make a separate post for it. I had no time to do the other hub. I will do it tomorrow but I expect it to be the same.

This doesn't apply to your issue, but on the topic of bearing buddies, I have a 1972 Dilly trailer and can't find the right size bearing buddy for it. Is there a number Identifying what I should be looking for on the bearing buddy or does anyone know of a source to find this part?
