So in the end it was a standard 7/8-14 NC ; that makes more sense.

Sounds like a great repair, and you certainly had the tool's to make it possible. I wonder what the cost for that repair would be at the average shop.

The cost would have been prohibitive...cheaper to buy a new crank.
If the crank had been in the motor and had to be removed first, it would almost have been a write off.

If it weren't a brand new old stock crank, I wouldn't have even bothered with it, but it was new in the original box and the only part remaining to complete a complete new old stock motor.
