There are 2 books I think you will find very helpful and interesting: Elements of Boat Strength by Dave Gerr and Boat Building With Aluminum by Stephen F Pollard. Good luck!

No special rod, we use 5356 mostly because it is the only rod that will anodize, all the other stuff turns black when you anodize it.

Ok, here is the first drawing. Pleas excuse my cad skills, I'm learning that too. It's in pdf. Feel free to print it, scratch around on it, and send it back with any ideas or improvements you might have! Especially structural. I am going towards 8' wide, 20' total length. flat bottom, smooth deck. Probably use a diamond plate on the deck. 2"x2" 6061 frame work, skinned with 5052. Semi foam filled for added rigidity, unless someone tells me thats a bad idea. 20" transom, I'll definitly need some help on engineering that! Hidden batterys and fuel cell. removable box and shooting stand in the front. I'll use that to store bowfishing gear, and probably remove it when just fishing. Seats in front of the helm possible with storage underneath. The drawing is labeled for the most part. I haven't gotten a good start on the frame work drawing yes. Or rear profile. that should be soon. Please give me you knowledge on this, I want it to be a keeper! Thanks fellas

Finally I think I have a drawing up! Can anyone tell me why Iboats takes so long to load? Is it a Protection problem on my end. Any way, I decided to go with a 6" skirt around the deck to prevent equipment loss and for a place to mount down lights for night fishing etc... any suggestions?

8' wide x 18' good luck. That is pontoon territory and remember your going to need a trailer too. That's alot to tow.

LOL you aint kidding there. I looked at a BIG john boat at a dealer lot it was an old onr that was about 7' wide and 22' long looked like a monster.. i tried to lift the toung of the boat and i think i left my right nut laying on the ground when i left, i asked what size motor it would tale to "plane" that boat and the dealer said you cant.... its a barge when they get that big, you would have to have a motor twice as big as the boat would hold to get it out of the water, :( ruined my day i have been wanting a BIG flat fishing boat for years, they only wanted 2000.00 for it with a trailor, ive had 6x16 johns before but i wanted Bigger :) good luck :D

I am working on the boyancy issue, with weight and water displacement. I hope I can get it on plane. I am thinking around 100 hp. I got an old merc black max, it migh do the job. Here are is and updated drawing. I aint through designing yet! If I can get it to work on paper, it's gettin built!:D I'm hoping for about a 4" draft. I got a little 16' x 5 jon right now. It planes out and runs 20+ mph with a 18 hp rude. It gives me hope. Just not enough room.
