There is a vast knowledge base in this forum of hands on type people that have helped soo many of us including myself. My personal thanks to all who have continually chipped in with their knowledge and help.

There is a constant population growth of members here that are getting more and more interested in DIY boat projects.

I would like to suggest an addition to the Building and Restore forum that helps everyone modeled after the Engines FAQ section. I'm really not trying to create more work for you Mods :D

I'm just seeing a large group of new folks coming in with some of the same questions over and over agian. Some folks have even created special DIY posts to explain some of these things.

ie -
Transom Repair
Hole Patching
Floor Replacement
Fiberglass Repair
Carpeting and/or?
Aluminum Repair

Anyway what are your opinions on a Repair/Restore/Building FAQ section.

Maybe a top locked post within where people can list their own share a project pages that have been a great help to myself and plenty of others.

I also put together a list of terms that would have helped me when I was a newbie considering my own build or restore projects. (i'm still a newbie) There is still a couple things on this list that I'm still unsure about. :)

Please help to define these items and I will follow up at the end by putting them all into one big list for a new topic or possibly a new FAQ section. Also feel free to add your own terms as I'm know there are plenty that I've forgotten.

Boat Building/Restoring Basic Dictionary by Iboats Members

Lofting
Fairing
Nesting

Stitch & Glue
Fillet

Lapstrake
Strip Building

Fiberglass
Tape
Cloth
Mat
Roving
Epoxy Resin
Polyester Resin

Frame
Keel
Hull
Transom
Stringer
Sheer
Bulkhead
Bow
Stern
Chine
Chine Logs
Rub Rail
Gunwale
Bilge
Breasthook
Sponson
Batten

freeboard
buoyancy
Displacement Hull
Planing Hull
Jig

Wood terms -
Marine Grade
Void Free
Scarf Joint
Butt Blocking
Gusset

Ok I'll start

Lofting - Drawing your plans to your wood.

Nesting - I believe is laying out your plans to make the best use of materials thus creating less waste.

Stitch & Glue - Is one process of boat building. Parts are typically cut out of plywood and stiched together with wires or zip ties, The seams are glued and fiberglassed then wires or ties are then cut.

Fillet - Is the bead of thickened epoxy layed in a inside seam during the stitch & glue process.

Hull - The basic shell of a boat

Bow - The front of the boat

Stern - The rear of the boat

Transom - The back wall of the boat that holds the
motor.

Chine - Bottom edge of the side of the boat.

Chine Log - Material that makes up the strength for the chine.

Gunwale - top outter edges of the hull

Rubrail - The strip that runs around the outside edges of the gunwale to protect it from hitting things.

Bilge - the lowest point inside the boat where water collects.

Keel - The bottom centerline of the boat.

Freeboard - The distance between the waterline and gunwales.

Displacement Hull - A hull design that moves water away to allow it to move through the water easier. i.e. canoe, kayak

Planing Hull - A hull design that allows the hull under power to ride up on top of the water to eliminate drag.

Jig - A form on which a boat is built to keep its shape during the construction process.

I know what a lot of the rest of them are but dont think I could adequetly define them in laymans terms. :)

I think links to threads of some of the great projects done here would be a huge help to anyone with a question or ten.

Great idea Wimp! I see folks asking the same question without knowing its been asked and answered just a few posts back. And it's exhausting to read through all the posts.

Plus not everyone knows how to do the Iboat database search. And the database search can be frustrating when a key word search brings up sites that still have nothing to do with your original problem.

I like your idea :D

Alright dink, you're heading this up. Shall we start listing links? I spend a lot of time searching anyway, and could start compiling something. We should get a mod to "sponsor" this.

Yes lets have a Mod Sponser this

We dont even really need a seperate FAQ forum to start...

How bout a Sticky Topic so it stays at the top of the list untill we get a bunch of ideas in this one... We can compile everything within this topic then move it all to an organized FAQ forum of its own. :)

I thumb through a lot of the old posts here for info so I have no problem compiling lists of very complete posts. I'll cut and paste the step by step instructions and give credit to the author instead of a link to the post to keep it simple. That is if we can get some support here from the authorities above. :D

Just dont want to waste a lot of time on a post like this that will eventually float on down the list and noone will search anyway to find the info.

You realize though that once all of our critical knowledge and information has been categorized, sub-categorized, sorted, re-sorted, proof read and approved...there will be no further need for our services as great and noble providers of illustrative B***S***!

Hey, maybe we should rethink this idea...

Re: Build & Restore Faq (everyone help please)

oh yes there will be... first we only list the most frequently asked questions. There will still be the 25% that over look the faq's section and go straight to posting a new topic... and we can continue to scold them about faq's and searching :D Also there's plenty of questions aside from the basics, floors transoms stringers etc...
