Re: Build vs restore?

Well, changing directions a little bit. I think the Glastron would be a nice boat when done, but a huge project to undertake, and possibly need to upgrade my truck to tug it around. Also would be a handful to launch alone if I chose to go out solo.. What I have decided is that I will buy a runabout or bowrider and sew up a camper canvas/ frame for trips I know I will be staying over on the boat, and just use a sleeping bag. Or just a sleeping bag under the stars as long as I'm away from the possibility of critters. I'm currently eyeballing a 1981 Bluefin bowrider on Boat angel. If that's said to be a reliable seller, I might just bite on it. It's only a couple hrs from my house

Re: Build vs restore?

I bought my first project boat through Boat Angel. I had no problems or issues and found them to be a trustworthy group. However, since the boats are donated to them and they really don't take possession of them, they are relying on the descriptions provided by their donors. So, assume that nothing works and it will be a total gut job. Most people don't donate items that have working power, etc...

I just checked out that blue fin. Size (16') and body (aluminum hull) would make a very manageable project (only major pitfalls would be major hull damage, which I don't see in the pics, or extensive corrosion - which hard to find without some digging. Also, if that 90 evinrude o/b runs (or you can get it running without too much effort, that would be really good power. In short, I think you have your boat. :)

Check out Jasoutside's Sea Nymph thread for a similar metal boat project with a 90 horse 'rude if you wants some extra motivation. He did a great job.

I'm currently watching it. I won't bid yet, so the price doesn't increase unnecessarily.. Hopefully tho, it doesn't skyrocket in price. Only thing is, that Holsclaw trailer has 4 lug hubs, which I know is uncommon. Have to figure that out because I would need to bring it home on that trailer, and I wouldn't test the old tires/ wheels

Is there a tractor supply close to you or the boat? $55 ea would be worth taking just in case the tires are shot.

Nice looking BlueFin, looks like it's got deep sides & and it's not too far from the house.....

New tires to get it home, pull them off & put the originals back on until you start the trailer rehab, and when you're ready, you've already got new tires :)

I agree w/ PMC's assessment......

Yes, we do have a few TSC's close by ( different directions ). Not sure if they have 4x4 lug trailer wheels there, in stock, but they are on the website, at least 4.80-12's. Only thing with that is the original wheels are 530x450 12" ( Crosley wheels ), so they are a little larger I think. Might just mean go slower so the bearings don't overspeed..

I know this is the trailer it's on. 5L85N65E83Gf3L73H7ca2259bfabbc3151bf5.jpg

Well, I put in a bid. I was high bidder for a while, but it didn't stay there long and it's beyond my comfort zone now, with a sight unseen boat.
