Since the upholstery staples poke holes in the coating anyway, I opted to seal the wood with something less expensive like polyurethane. Seemed a little overkill to coat with high dollar epoxy when the seal is going to be compromised right off the bat. It is pretty thin, soaks in good, goes a long way, and is way cheaper than resin. A couple coats of polyurethane is quite sufficient in my opinion.
