I am going to build the wood-floor on a pontoon frame. I was planning on just laying the 8' x 4' marine-ply directly to the aluminum C-channel. Then of course, the carpet on top of the ply-flooring. Is there and treatments or coatings I need to apply to the wood prior to installing it? Thanks for the help!

You can epoxy coat, or paint, both sides, that goes a long way toward extending the life.

Stay away from "waterproofers" used on decks. They tend to leach out components that make gluing carpet almost impossible.

I'd just use P/T Plywood,........

Marine rated Plywood has No extra Rot Resistence,....
Just a lack of internal Voids......

Where as the P/T will last probably Longer than you'll Own the Boat........

If I use P/T Ply what kind of sealer? Would Epoxy work? And is Expoxy and Expoxy resin the same thing?

Epoxy resin is a good choice. However, paint works well too.

If it were me, I'd paint both sides with a good (oil base) paint.

I'd then attach the deck using stainless screws (sealed with 3M 5200) and carpet it-forget it-enjoy.

Its funny you mention paint, I installed a floor in my storage shed and used plywood painted on all sides with Kiltz oil base primer (nasty stuff) its been in there
three years and still feels strong. So if I do this to my boat floor I would like to think its just as good as PT ply, right? Zet

I guess that would mean that P/T Plywood, Painted with Kiltz,(the Real Nasty Blend) with or without a Topcoat,+ Then the Carpet would be the Best of All,..??..........d:)

Do you mean: "Kilz"??

Kilz is a primer made to hide stains/spots.

I'm not saying it's not OK for a primer, just why the extra expense for the Kilz product? Unless you have it laying around.8)

I'm just trying to figure out the best way to re-place my floor..When people say to epoxy the floor first to seal it does this mean just buy some epoxy and use right out of the can and paint it on or do you need to use a hardner with it? Plus fiberglass the whole thing? I'm sorry if I'm frustrating anyone I just starting to learn about this..Zet

zetman,

"Epoxy" requires hardener.

For your situation, just paint both sides and you'll be fine.

When you install the screws, make sure they are stainless and sealed with a good sealant that stays pliable. (3M, GE, whatever).

Enjoy the project and don't sweat it.
