bumping in reverse

I've got a '77 115hp Johnson on my 18' boat. When backing up, there are bumps behind me. Seems the engine is repeatedly bouncing a bit. It will back OK, but with bumping going on.

Is something in the engine tilt/trim mechanism maybe loose or broken? I get the feeling it isn't being held down in reverse like it should be.

What should I be looking for ?

Re: bumping in reverse

Most likely the clutchdog in the lower unit is worn, or the cable/linkage is not adjusted properly. Causing the lower unit to pop in and out of gear momentarily.

Should be a manual release lever that allows tilting located on the motor bracket. Make sure it's in the down position...

Re: bumping in reverse

I agree with roscoe. I just had a similar problem with a 1968 40hp evinrude. The problem I had was with the forward gear. It would bang out of gear moreso at lower speeds. When I took it apart not only was the clutchdog toast but the forward gear was to. The owner of the boat did not have alot of money to spend so I switched the gears and reversed the clutchdog. now it bangs in reverse but is fine in forward.
Good luck

slow enguagement of the gears will cause the wear . never put in gear slow . a quick pop into gear is the proper way
