Bunk thickness

Thanks for the excellent advice that I've gotten on my current restoration project. I have a 1988 Celebrity 210v cuddy that I have just finished doing a top to bottom restoration on. I'm now starting on the trailer. It is a 1990 Escort trailer. I do not have the model number available. It appears as though the only trailer repairs other than finish is bunk and keel roller replacement. I do have a question regarding the thickness of the bunks. Is there a formula to determine bunk thickness. Currently the bunks are 2x6s and an additional piece of 5/4 decking wrapped in bunk carpet. I don't know whether the extra piece of 5/4 is stock or if it was added at some point in the past. My boat weighs 2900 lbs and is 20.5 ft long. Can I replace just the 2x6 and recarpet or do I also need to add the extra 5/4 for strength.

Ayuh,... It's rarely 'bout Strength, but Elevation...

If the hull sits in the cradle well Now,...
Why screw with it,..
Rebuild what's there...
If there's a Problem, deal with it, rather than potentially creatin' a New 1....

Take the 5/4 out, 'n the hull sits an Inch lower....

every one of my bunk trailers has been a 2x6. however the pre-cut bunk carpet never fit - always had to buy 20' of 8' wide marine carpet. may be prior owner purchased pre-cut bunk carpet and ended wrapping it on the 5/4 as a lazy method vs fitting carpet.

I would like to install 2x6's only with the PVC top caps, and do without the 5/4 if that is acceptable.
