Re: Burn out

Bud you have to just set a date and do it, no exceptions your taking a vacation, if no one wants to step up then everyone is out of work for a week so either poop or get off the pot, put it in their lap and let the employees figure it out.

When I did it I had to fire everyone when I got back

Re: Burn out

You will know when its time for a change. I reached that point a little over 3 years ago. Was the production manager for a custom fabrication shop with 18 guys working for me. Made awesome money but was putting in about 70 hours/week with very little free time. What I didn't get accomplished at work I took home and spent my evenings doing paperwork. I woke up one day and said that is enough. Quite the job and took the summer off. Wife was NOT happy but she understood.

I decided when it was time to go back to work that I didn't want any of the responsibilities/stress I had before. I was luck enough to find a job 3 minutes from home (used to commute 70 minutes one-way). I'm now a production technician on the shop floor taking home $9 less per hour but loving what I do. I get off work at noon every Friday, so it's like a long weekend every week. The best part ..................... I walk out the doors at the end of the day and forget about work, and just the elimination of the commuting time gives me an extra 40 hours free time every month.

Our family has had to make adjustments but we found that the extra money I was making went towards unnecessary luxury things for the most part. We still manage to pay our bills, eat well, take simpler vacations (boating, camping) and still put money aside for a rainy day. We have re-prioritized what is important and I hope to be around longer because of it.

^^^^
With me the the monies are hit and miss, more miss than hit.
If you did not require all the tools and equipment to do this work, life would be so much easier.

(and not running around the world would help)

Re: Burn out

Stress is self generated.
The way out is to find out how you are doing it and why.

Moody nailed it. There's two sides to the income-expenses equation.
I'd rather be poor and happy than rich, tired, and burned out. Been both a few times.

Re: Burn out

I like many others have been there and finally learned to turn it off at the door and turn it back on when I walked back in that door. I also learned the lesson of not being overly dedicated to a job because it isn't always dedicated to you it's hard to accept but true unless your self employed.

Thats why we named our boat ReHab. I came home from work a couple times last summer and the Admiral would take one look and 15 min. later everything was packed and ready to go. 20 min. later I`m sitting in the water with not a care in the world. Cell phones go in a dry bag, shut off and I forget about everything. There was a couple times I didnt want to come in, which reminds me I really need some extra lighting.

Re: Burn out

I am self employed my self been in the same trade for 33 years and when we started I grew the business from one man into 15 men and 3 trucks but that was when men liked to work I took one vacation in 10 years, took some time off but stayed in the same field learned a lot from some other folks and one of the most important thing was moderation so now I shut it down at 5pm everyday and eat right and exercise everyday and I keep in the front of my mind the work will be there even if I am not.Happy Easter

Re: Burn out

Been on vacation this week myself. Back to the grind Monday night :(

12 hour night shift, and we've been shorthanded since January, lucky to get one night off a week. Actually took the week so I could work on the boat, but had so much to do, I didn't even get it out of the barn until Friday! But, I accomplished most of the 'gotta get it done' list...

Funny part, the Bossman called 8:00 mon. night. One of the other guys was sick. Sorry, but I'm on vacation. Ya'll will just have to suck it up. Were it one of the others on vacation, I would deal with whatever....

You have to find someway to deal with the stress. What works for some may not work for you. You have to figure out what, where, when, etc.....

Re: Burn out

Rob, you need a plan.
One that has a clear start point based on your personality and the way you work and a clear end point based on what you want to achieve.
The amount of steps (and reasonable time) in between to get there would, again, be based on what will work for you and what regime you likely would keep to in terms of discipline, etc.
Good Luck
BP:)
