so I have a 1997 faststrike 175 that I was running on the Hudson river Monday. while idleing I could smell a strong burning rich smell.... burnt my nose a little... since its winter and I cant easily run the boat at home on muffs to try and 'tune" it.... and the fact that I think with the 2 more cylinders than I have been used to( I usually ran V4's) I am thinking it would be harder to truly listen to the subtle noises of sneezes and cough to determine proper idle mixtures. soooo I am asking ABOUT how many turns is a good guess at calming this burning rich smell.... all the carbs were turned in and backed out according to the book when I first got the motor in uses last summer. so they would probably all need the same adjustment.... I was going to do one full turn each......id appreciate some feedback.....but know , I already know I cant do it the way it should PROBABLY needed to be donwe...I am only looking for advice on how many turns of the idle rich screws....thanks

different oils different smells ....did you change oil type

no, I have had about 5 gallons of BRP synthetic oil for a few years now, and I used that. It is a rich running smell that applies to auotmoblies as well...I remember back in the carbuerator days cars running extra rich had a similar smell....its not a burnt oil smell.

If the carbs are 'backed out to according to the book' then they are really rich. As you implied, tuning 4 carbs was hard enough... In theory, turning each in the same amount should work, but for some reason it rare seems to. Myself, I would run it in gear a little above normal idle, say 800 - 900 rpm. Lean one carb for highest rpm, then richen it 1/4 turn, repeat for other carbs, returning to the rpm you first chose. Then go back and do it all over but backing out 1/8 turn. Set idle at speced rpm and see if further adjustment makes much difference. Check for bogging on acceleration. If does back each needle out 1/8 and try again. It worked for me
