It doesn't matter where the air is coming from so long as it is available. A compression test is only measuring the ability of the piston and piston rings to seal the combustion chamber so all it needs is air to fill the combustion chamber, that's why its important to use full throttle so you don't restrict the ability to fill the combustion chamber.<br /><br />Removing all the plugs gives you a higher rpm on the test and gives more accurate results.
