Hey BushCat,<br />There's lots of things I've never heard of and leaving all the plugs in except for the cylinder being tested is one of 'um. Could ya explain that? <br /><br />Thx. & c/6<br /><br />Hooty

you can leave the rest of the spark plug in to check it just pull the kill switch so it doesn't start on you. is what I think he was saying.

If the reed valves are bad, air can be sucked in from other cylinders with the plugs out.... Some engine designs isolate cylinders in chambers, and some share same atmosphere inside the block. My Merc manual of years past is where I was given this procedure. I hope this is right.......But Hooty...you are the Ancient Mariner(can you teach an old dog new tricks)

It doesn't matter where the air is coming from so long as it is available. A compression test is only measuring the ability of the piston and piston rings to seal the combustion chamber so all it needs is air to fill the combustion chamber, that's why its important to use full throttle so you don't restrict the ability to fill the combustion chamber.<br /><br />Removing all the plugs gives you a higher rpm on the test and gives more accurate results.
