I have a 1977 35 evinrude with a jet on it. The jet fits 20-35 hp models to 2005. Would I notice the Power difference buy going to a newer (prop shaft rated) outboard and transfering the jet? were the newer 35's as reliable as the old ones? My old engine runs fine but a few more horse power would be welcome.

imho it wouldn't be worth it.. The newer motor would be a stronger motor so you would be able to carry alittle more gear but it wouldn't effect top speed (assuming you are reaching the max rpm now) because that is limited by how much water the "small" pump can displace. And we are only talking about 5 hp difference here between your motor and a newer 35. If it were me, I would sell your motor which should fetch 1000+ and buy a newer 50/35 which has a larger powerhead + pump.

Hey Lojo.......What kind of boat do you have that motor on and how fast does your jet push it?
I have a 35 with a jet that I recently bought but need to buy a boat for it and was wondering what size of boat you recommend.
Thanks

Its on a 1448 flat bottom lowe(riveted not welded). It will do about 20 mph with about 1200# of total weight(family of 4) but it really comes alive with only 1 or 2 people.

here is the problem, you have a 35 hp power head, there is and extreme, to me, waste of power, converting to a jet. the jet drive conversion of puts out 70% or the power, compared to a Propped lower unit. you are loosing 30% efficiency.

Ya, they are a complete waste of power. The 35 pushes my boat marginally better than a 20 with a prop but the rocky rivers in northern BC are death for props. Once you know what you are doing you can switch back to the prop leg in about 1 hour if you want to hit the lakes.
