Buy a Starter Boat before that Perfect Boat

Just a bit of advice for noob boat buyers...

You really need to boat in your area with different types of boats before you know what you really want.

I wasted a year looking for that "Perfect Deck Boat" that I was positive that I wanted.
I was convinced that a deck boat was the best all-around type of boat.

I couldn't find a deck boat, so I 'settled' for a Dual Console Bay Boat as a starter boat.
Turns out that I use the boat more for fishing than I thought I would, so that extra deck space up next to the gunnels really comes in handy. I also realize that cushy vinyl seats are not for me. I need a low maintenance boat that I could just hose off, and let the self-bailing deck deal with the overflow. Also, storms and big water. I needed a more serious boat than I thought. I was often glad of the high freeboard of the DC.

So, it was a big surprise to me, but it turns out that my "perfect" boat is a no-frills high-freeboard Center Console bay boat.

Not the cushy swim-platform party deck boat.

If I went back in time two years and told my younger self this, my younger self would not have believed it.

The point is, now's the time to get the good deals on end-of-season used boat sales. Don't waste it. If you find a great deal on a boat that's 'close enough', buy it. Use it for a year or two. By then, you'll know what's the perfect boat for you.

For me, I'm now looking for a nice Center Console outboard powered bay boat, with bow seating, and maybe with a small outboard kicker.

I also now know that I'd really like a smaller center console shallows boat as my number 2 boat, like an older Boston Whaler with a decent 2 stroke outboard.

Makes craigslist searches much easier to know exactly what ads to jump on.

This happened with my express. I had ideas that I needed an express boat. After 2 seasons that changed to needing a flybridge boat. Now I'm thinking diesels and two staterooms :D.

I originally intended to buy a pontoon, but saw this great Cuddy and went for it. Glad I did as it turns out the toon would not have worked for us.

I know exactly what you mean. I thought I would enjoy fishing inland lakes. I got a 14' aluminum and I enjoyed it a little. Then I bought a 19' bowrider figuring I just needed more room and that I'd have more fun trolling for stripers and relaxing.

Now I have 24' skipjack and I'm ditching the lakes altogether for the open ocean. You don't know **** about what is going to ring your bell until you get in the ring, so hop in.

Or you could just be damm lucky with your wife.

retired in 2002
Told the wife to pick any good looking boat no longer than 19' . Docking restriction.. I will pick the engine.

Went to several boat shows. She says sit in the only white boat with black trim. OK Chap 186 SSI + a 5.0 L 220 hp + every option.

See how easy it is. Still with wife & boat. :)

I understand exactly what you are saying. We have been through five boats in as many years trying to find that perfect fit.
First 16' bayliner Capri volvo aq125. To small not enough power
Second was a closed bow century 260merc I/O plenty of power not enough room
Third 18' starcraft ss outboard 200merc plenty of room, drank fuel, way to loud and no wake
Fourth 19.5' searay openbow 3.0l merc good amount of room ok power with a 17p four blade prop still little to no wake
And number 5 still currently have this one '90 supra bravura 21.5' closed bow 351w ford direct drive inboard
Lacking some room but she pulls like champ monster wake with 1300# of ballast.

So yes I understand you never really know what you need till you use it for a wile.

I know I wanted a fish/ski boat at the time. Ski'd when i was younger, now 55 and all I do is fish and once in a while pull a tube for the kids. Had my boat 23 years. 21ft starcraft 175 hp 4.3.
Been a great boat.

Classic post http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=298831

It used to be a "sticky" but doesn't seems to be there anymore...Great advice from a wise guy.

Buy a boat. Any decent boat. Go boating!

There isn't a boat design around that is capable of doing everything I like to do on the water, or that fits every situation perfectly. I like to fish the banks, but do so rarely. I love watersports, especially slalom skiing, so I like a boat with a flat wake. I also enjoy tubing and would like to pull/try wakeboarding as well, so a ballast system gets added in the mix. We do a fair amount of just cruising around. We also enjoy staying on the hook with 4-6 people on board in the middle of summer.

So we need a 30' cruiser with a flat wake, a wakeboard tower, bow-operated electric trolling motor, and is trailerable, lol.

In the end, we have a runabout, a bass boat, a jet ski, and eventually will have a dedicated 28-32ft cruiser. The only way to cover all of our activities is to have the best tool for the job. Will probably trade out the runabout for a v-drive eventually.

Re: Or you could just be damm lucky with your wife.

Couldn't agree more. I also convinced myself I wanted a Deck Boat so we can Cruise/Fish/Tow with it. Why wouldn't you want a 3 in 1 type of boat? Well, since I bought a cheap 18' Galaxie deck boat(really just a wide bow rider without the windshield), I have changed my tune. I've only fished out of it once and we spend most of our time on the lake either pulling tubes (will prbably change to wakeboarding when the kids get older) or changing out at the sandbar. I have now decided I want to either get a 20' bow rider or a V-Drive, and buy a another cheaper fishing boat on the side.
