Im buying a 1995 short shaft electric start 9.9 johnson. looks as though its in good condition, cowl may have been painted but internals look very clean. Starts up first pull. Is there anything particular i should look for other than loose powerhead mounts? im a student and have been saving my pennies trying to get this right the first time. paying $795.00
-thanks

I would definitely ask the owner if you could do a compression check on the cylinders..this would tell a lot about the motor's health. You would want the psi numbers to be in the low 100s and close together. Other than that, how does it run?

thanks for the speedy reply... I saw it run in a tub today sounded nice and smooth started first try... i'll have them check the compression too. its replacing a yamaha 25 sadly it died on me last summer. I know this will be a bit slower but hope it will plane out all the same. any thoughts? 14 ft aluminum semi-V 1 or 2 ppl.

I know it's asking a lot of a seller, any possibility of asking to try the motor out on your boat on the lake? Planning I think would be a little iffy, depending on gear & body weight. I think you're very near the borderline. $800 is a lot of money to not be happy.

Have cash in hand and tell the guy "if it planes with two people...sold!" Otherwise, I would be looking for a bigger motor. Again, I know it's a lot to ask a seller, but it does not hurt to ask.

Personally, I would want a bit more HP.

I took it for a test drive today... very impressed with the power, planed out with two people quiet easily. ran for about two hours then I noticed it was leaking gas... think a carb plug wasn't put back in. it quit on me but I covered the hole with my finger and got back to the dock. gonna ask them to fix it.
