Buying a boat just to rip it apart ! ?? Options ??

Got myself into a bad position.

Bought a boat thats needs a little work, and an outdrive for the 40 year old 120 hp MC-1.

Not sure if I should do this, or look for a newer powerplant complete with drive.

If I go with new power, which seems very expensive, one option looks to be buying a newer
weathered and wore out boat and stripping out the 3.0L and Alpha one.

Seems like a real shame to do that to an '86 Sea Ray cuddy. She's solid, the trailer is really nice, but the interior is shot,
and the gelcoat is trashed. They won't sell it without the trailer, and I can only get them down to $1800.

Should be able to get a few bucks back for the trailer come spring, but I really hate to create another unwanted hull.

I'd say you need to do some serious shopping.... I bought a 28' regal with good twin 260/alpha's for 600. I think you could find what you want cheaper.... heck there was a merc 4 cyl/alpha on c/l here for $350 not too long ago.

1972 Starcraft Holiday 18'
Needs:
shift cable - maybe
all fuel lines
lower for MC-1 outdrive
new blower
general upgrade of wiring and seating.
120 hp engine runs, not confirmed by me, and won't be before spring or later.
Condition of seals - unknown
Its missing at least one of the drain plugs
It is currently on a 1 year old trailer that I had.

1986 Sea Ray

Seats are shot
Dog house is shot
Everything in the cuddy is shot
Transom and floor seem good, but really didn't check any further considering my intended use.
Comes with a really nice trailer that I could sell with or without the hull when I am done.

3.0 l 140 hp
Don't have pics of the engine or drive, but all looks very good and intact.
Compression checks out good.
Currently winterized, but dealer is willing to run it for me.

Here is the link to the dealers website and photos.
The photos make the boat look much better than it actually is.
It is extremely sun damaged and weathered.

Should be able to steal the fuel cell, engine, drive, blower, and controls to put in the Holiday.

I have no interest in the Sea Ray, except as a donor vessel.
Too big for me, and don't want a glass boat.

Haven't been able to find anything complete and functional.

The last decent 3 liter I found (complete running engine - no drive) sold for $1100.

Have found several engines stripped of ignition, fuel pump, hydraulic pump, carb, or damaged in some way.
Also have found lowers, upper and lower, but missing all transom hardware.

I am also new to i/o's, so having a complete matched set of components sure seems like it would be better than playing hunt for parts and hope the are all there, and pray they fit together.

Maybe I should just sell the Holiday, recover my $400, and stick to outboard powered boats.

roscoe.....that is a nice ray....

but if you want the other boat thats ok.

do the swap......pull all you want and put it on the tinny.

take all that is left over.....and install it on the ray.
.....vasoline the hull, and sell it as project boat for the money you have into it.

If you are willing to drive a bit you can save yourself a heep of money.
I sold a complete water ready rig with a 3lt prealpha for $1200 two months ago.
Im sure I can find one neer me for less than half of that.

Roscoe, if I were you I'd question how well the Sea Ray was mechanically maintained considering the lack of maintainence on the rest of the boat. Surely if the disregarded the upkeep of the seats, gelcoat and interior (and you can see those things) the engine didn't receive too much attention either...

The Holiday was on ebay, Bart Starr's Rawhide Boys Ranch was the seller.

I hear you halfmoa.
Always a concern, and I have looked at plenty that I wouldn't even consider, at any price.

And any used engine and or drive has the same concern.

This one, although it was probably neglected for a few years, seems to have been left alone, not boogered up by a wannabe wrench.
Is also complete, intact, and functional.

I guess I better decide how much I am willing to invest before the boat gets moved into the "project room".
