I am looking at purchasing a 1986 Bayliner Capri,18-20 ft. the hull is in good condition and the ineterior in reasonalbly good shape also. This boat has not been registered since 1999 and garage stored. Am not sure of the condition of the motor, Volvo Penta. Does anyone have a good guess as to how much this boat would be worth and what to offer.

Re: Buying a Boat

Not a good year for Bayliner........ about $500 in my book. The hulls had some construction issues. Be careful ;)

Could be worth anywhere from $100 to $2500.
An 18' or a 20' ?
Size and condition of engine?

Condition of drive. stringers, transom, trailer?

way to many unknowns.

Re: Buying a Boat

The key to real estate is location, location, location.

The key to used boats is condition, condition, condition.

It really depends. If truely garage stored (funny how they all say that) all it's life, it could be a nice find. If it was garage stored once in a while and outside the rest of the time, it could be a pile. Need to look it over real good and determine condition for yourself. Once you know the condition, take a look at ebay, boat trader, craigslist, etc and get an idea of asking prices for comparable CONDITION boats (easier said than done). A marine survey may be needed if you aren't familiar with judging condition. Good luck with it.

Re: Buying a Boat

Jon thanks for the advise. this boat is right across the street from me and I have not seen it out of the garage for at least 10 years. I have looked at the hull and it does look in decent condition. the interior looks somewhat faded and normal wear and tear. Just don't know the condition of the motor, Volvo Penta. My thought are to offer anywhere from 1000-1500.

I own a bayliner, and admittedly I am a new boater. But you better believe I did some serious research before buying anything. With that said, a mid 90's bayliner?......run.........like the wind

That sounds like it might be worth having checked out. If the motor and drive are serviceable, it might be a nice find.

Sounds like you are going into it with the right frame of mind. The motor and drive are still made, so even if there is a small problem with it, it can be fixed. Pay close attention to the floors and transom condition. Good luck with it.

Re: Buying a Boat

I have just found out the the Volvo Penta motor was replaced with a new Volvo Penta long block motor in 1991. I believe the HP is 225, but not sure. Also do not know how many hours on it either. I looked at it and it is exceptionaly clean motor for all these years. It was last registered till 1999. Does anyone know approx. how much this new motor would increase the value of this boat.

A quick tow to the local marine mechanic would be money well spent to have them check it out for you. If you can actually put it on the water for a test run that would be good too.

A dealer mentioned to me that the seals on the outdrive would probably have to be replaced. Anyone know how many seals there are and possibly a est. cost of the top of your head. Or could a person replace the seal hemself.
