hey guys,
I'm in the process of buying a brand new 2014 Stingray with a 2013 Yamaha 150. I didn't realize the motor was a '13 until they brought out the paperwork. The salesman told me that manufacturers often slap on older year engine models for whatever reason, so therefore its quite common. Is this true? Will this effect resale value down the road if I went to sell it? I am getting a great deal on the boat being its a '14 and the '15 models are now out, but I Just wanted to ask and make sure the year difference is normal before I go ahead with the purchase. I believe the motor has an hour or two run time on it so would the fact that it has been sitting for quite a while be a concern? I really doubt they fogged the cylinders or anything like that. Am I over thinking this? What are your thoughts?
thank you!!!

Had an '86 Bayliner with an '85 Force on it, package branded '86. Research found the Force was built in Nov. of '85 and didn't get mounted till the boat was built.

Same thing happens with I/O and is the main reason for asking for the serial number when questions are asked

Outboards are titled as the year they are built, not by a model year like a boat hull. Perfectly normal to have a 2013 engine on a 2014 boat.

No worries with this at all, assuming it has never been run on a boat.. Unlike cars, they don't do model years on motors for precisely this reason: it is common for a motor built in the fall of one year not to be sold until 18 months later. I wouldn't be worried about this at all, unless there had been a redesign of the motor in the next year (in which case, I would be trying to get a price drop).

I bought a new boat and engine in '89 and the title said '89 for both from a reputable dealer in Dallas. Years later on here I find out that '88 was the last year Merc. manufactured the "tower of power" for the 115 hp. My last boat was new but 2 years old when sold with a then current year model engine on it. Same kind of reputable dealer in the Dallas area. Main thing as I see it is that you know why the two differ. If just because of dealer stock overflow to the next year never heard of it being a problem.

The slick part of it is that you usually, as you indicated, get a great deal on the rig. Makes it all worth while.

thankyou all for the info! makes me feel better about the deal... and what about in regards to the motor sitting? The salesman said it may have about an hour or so runtime on it.. So i'm going to assume it could of potentially been sitting 6 months up to a year. anything to worry about if they didnt fog the motor?

Quite a while ago, Mercury stopped using model year designations and simply identifies engines by serial number. This was so dealers could sell new left-over engines without taking a big hit for depreciation. You could buy a new boat at a Mercury dealer and get an engine up to two years old as a package. It will be sold as a new engine and boat.

By the time you get 2-foot-itis and want to trade up the slight difference in value of the Yammi from one year to the next will not be significant.

No knowing where you are located... it is likely your engine is going to be unused for more than 6 months out of the year.
While it is recommended, most engines do not get fogged and last for many decades.
As long as it is maintained and run every year, it will not be an issue.

I purchased a brand new 2012 boat an made special arrangements to have a 2010 engine installed.
It did not have the EPA required Catalytic Converters and was $2000 less expensive.

thanks for all the good info!
4-5 years ago, i bought a neglected boat with 120 Force by Merc. It had been sitting 3 years unfogged and the motor was locked up. I got the boat cheap. Took it home, pulled the head and sure enough there was a good amount of rust in cylinders. For months i tried freeing up that motor with sprays and penetrating oils but never got it...I guess it all depends on the environment & the amount of time stored unfogged, but they can certainly lock up..

Are you paying a used motor price? When did the warranty start?

It is very common for a brand new model year boat to be sold with a brand new motor that was manufactured the previous year (actually I'd say that is the norm). It is not common for a brand new boat to be sold with a used motor.
