I am about to buy an 14' Alumacraft (1436LT-135lbs). It's rated for a 15HP outboard, so I plan on buying a 15HP outboard motor, a 40-46lb thrust foot controlled trolling motor, a fish finder, and a trailer. I will spend most of my fishing time fishing for bass on small lakes (once or twice a week) and sometimes on larger lakes (probably once every month or two). I don't know the size of the lakes but I live in middle Georgia if that helps. Also, on the smaller lakes I can kayak from one end to the other in about 45-60 minutes. The larger lakes are probably 6-8 times bigger.
My questions are:
1. If the transom height on the boat is 15", do I need an outboard with a 15" shaft or a 20" shaft?
2. I plan on using wood to build-up/raise the front portion of the boat for a casting platform (3-4 feet from the bow) so some additional weight will be added there. Does that matter for shaft size?
3. Since there are a lot fish finders on the market, what would be a good one to get for $150 or less?
4. Is the trolling motor I plan on getting too powerful?
5. I've heard a lot of good things about Optima deep cycle batteries. Is that a good one to get?
I really appreciate any information you guys can give me.

1. 15"
2.uh?
3.Eagle or Garmin
4.no
5.Yes.

Jon boats are lousy in wavy conditions. You will hate it on the larger lakes..but with your casting deck idea, I guess it's the best type of boat for that.

2. The weight of the plywood on the bow should not alter the requirements for the trolling motor enough to worry about.

I agree with Cobra on everything else. You might look at Trojan batteries also.

Here's a pic of my 14' Eldocraft that I converted to a bass boat 2 years ago. Your project sounds pretty darn close. Keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks to each of you for all the information. As far as the fish finder (Eagle or Garmin) should I go with one around the $140-$150 price range or would one around the $90-$100 price range be sufficient?
CN Spots - I like your boat and yes I envision something very close to that. The only difference I can think of is I don't know if I'll go as far back as the seat, maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of the way between the boat's installed aluminum bow deck (I think its about 20 inches) and the seat. As far as the wood you used for the deck, what type is it and what thickness? What did you use for the deck support (height wise), especially under your raised seat? Where were you able to get the carpet?
For the deck support I'm thinking about using 1x4(s) and making a flooring type construction, and for the casting deck 1/2" thickness. Hopefully that won't add too much weight.

Keep an eye on the weight. With two adults and gear your getting close to the limit.

The more you pay, the bigger and more detailed the screen and the more powerfull the sounder. The cheaper ones work too, but don't show as much detail. In shallow lakes, it makes little difference. You're just mainly looking for structure that holds fish anyway.
