Hi All!

I've decided to go ahead and buy a new outboard, 30hp/short-shart/electric start. Most likely a Yamaha, although all are good. Looking to get some info before I plop down $3K and go talk to the dealer, or buy online.

What is a "remote" motor, comapred to a "tiller" motor? I understand the tiller part...

Do electric-start models come with all the necessary hookups/wiring/soleinoids, etc., to complete the installation?

I've seen some that come with the controls. some that don't. How can they come with the control unit, if they don't know the length of the boat?

Can I adapt my old Gale control box just by changing cables?

I've found some online dealers whose prices are way cheaper, but am afraid I'll get soaked later on, with adding accessories just to get going.

Advice is appreciated...

Thanks
Rick

a remote motor is one that you steer with a steering wheel while a tiller is one you steer with your hand. Yes, electric start engines should come with everything you need to hook up your electric start. and yes again, im pretty sure you can adapt your old control box to fit your new engine.

The wiring on the new motor wiring harness is going to be different from the Gale.

I would buy new controls for my new motor, specify the length of throttle and shift cables when you order. ($400)

"controls" typically don't include a steering cable, as that is part of the helm unit. Not sure if you willl need to replace steering cable.

Thanks for the info... Yeah, I'll have to replace the steering helm - I'll go with the Teleflex for that.

I have controls for my Yamaha 8, I'll see if I can adapt them to the 30. If not, I'll be sellin a super nice 8 with all controls, etc.

Rick
