Re: Buying a used boat

well i went with the 1996 Chaparral 1830ss it seems to be a pretty good boat, the compression test came out good. The compression was all around 145 across the board and it ran great! It came with a complete snap on cover that covers the whole boat, bimini top and plus i got a 60 day warranty since it came from a dealer. I hope all works out well with it. Does anyone have any tips for putting on the snap on covers? It almost killed me out there trying to get it on before the rain storm! Once again thank you for all the quick and educational replies i received from each and everyone of you.

Congrats on the new boat! Pics or it didn't happen! LOL. I had to lay my snapon cover out in the sun for a few hours, before I could get it to go on. After it warmed up, it went on easy. I think in a beat the rain install, you just have to treat it like a heavy weight fighter and go 5 rounds with it.

Post up some pics - If the cover is a little wet it will stretch easier also.

Here are the pics guys, I took the boat out today and rode around for a couple of hours. Almost everything is perfect except for a growling noise when i turn the wheel all the way to either the left or right. I did notice it did it when the drive was in gear and out of gear and trimmed all the way down. If i trim it up a little it won't do it. The dealer told me that it was just the power steering pump getting old. Sound kinda like a gimble bearing to me. They also shinned it up real good with what seems to be a spray on wax after i got it back home today i noticed some oxidation on the hull so hopefully a good buffing and waxing will take care of that. does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing the growling noise and any tips on getting the oxidation off? I do have a 60 day warranty so i guess i need to figure out what is causing the growling noise and get the dealer to replace it. kinda sucks that i have to go back to the dealer, it cost $100.00 in gas just to get there and back.

Hard turn all the way to one side - with - power applied will get you a growling noise. It is from the u-joints and they don't like to go at extreme angles (left right, up down) the fact that the noise went away when you trimmed up a bit is a positive sign.

If the u-joints are going bad, you will get noise with moderate or even slight turning or trim angles.

Nice choice with the Chaparral. The built in anchor locker in the bow is the best thing since sliced bread. I really like the depth of the bow seating as well. They also cut the bow rails off and replace with handles and started only offeing them on the slightly larger/expensive SSi models a some years later. Other than the lack of snap in carpet which wasn't being done on small, mainstream boats then anyway, I like it.

Thanks guys, I really like it is amazing the difference in quality and how smooth it rides compared to my stingray. The overall comfort is awesome it's like having a Cadillac on the water. The built in anchor locker is awesome! This boat has so much storage room I can't find enough stuff to fill it all up. Should I try and get the dealer to go ahead and replace the u joints?or is that normal to hear the growling noise when turning all the way with the drive all the way down.
